Glucose Test
I see pictures of people holding up their lovely orange drinks before taking the 1 hour test. Do you guys get to drink it at home and then go to the doctors office for blood work or do you have to sit in the office the entire time?
My Dr wouldn't even let me go sit in my car when I did the 1 hour. I failed and now I'm dreading the 3 hours - mainly because I don't want to take time off work because that will cut into my maternity leave!!
For the 3 hour you need to get blood drawn every hour? Do you have to stay in the office or lab or did they let you go outside?

Glucose Test
Both pregnancies I was able to get it at my visit prior and take it an hour before showing up for bloodwork. So much easier that way. Especially this time with a toddler!

Glucose Test
So here's how the 3 hour will usually work: You will get your blood drawn a total of 4 times. They will draw your blood before you drink the glucose drink to get your baseline. You'll then have 5 minutes to consume the beverage and when you finish the drink, your clock starts. I was not allowed to get the drink ahead of time. I'm not sure how people do get it and drink it at home because you wouldn't be able to get a baseline blood level. You'll then get your blood drawn every hour, on the hour, for the next 3 hours. As for leaving, I was allowed to step outside of the lab to get some fresh air as needed but for short amounts of time. They would not let me go lay down/relax in my car because I asked. They tell you that you are not allowed to eat or drink anything once the glucose is consumed (ever water/ice is NOT allowed). Make sure you call ahead to make an appointment. Most places allow walk-in's for the 1 hour, but require an appointment for the 3 hour. A few other tips -- make sure that the drink is refrigerated ahead of time and bring a straw. The 3 hour drink is the same size as the 1 hour but so much sweeter -- clawingly sweet. Since you only have a short time to drink it, I found having a straw helped me get the drink down quicker without feeling like I was chugging it. Also, I believe that you will need to fast 8-9 hours before the test but are allowed to have water during that time -- I'd double check with your doctor though -- don't want to give you wrong info. Good luck!

This was my experience with the 3 hour too. I just brought my iPad and read a book.
For the 1 hour, I walked in and drank the drink. Then waited the hour for them to draw my blood and then left.

Re: Glucose Test
I went to a Quest lab. I had to drink the drink there for both tests and was not allowed to leave. I had my blood drawn 4 times, 1x before drinking, then 3x (every hour) after drinking the drink. I almost passed out at the end but got through. So annoying because I only failed my 1 hour by 5 points!

I had to have bloodwork taken right before I drank the drink. Drink the drink and then an hour later get more blood drawn. I had to stay in the office the whole hour.

Re: Glucose Test
It really wasn't a big deal. Yes, I had to take time off work. Got there, blood drawn baseline, drank drink (I like it), blood drawn every hour for 3 hours. I was able to go out & do shopping as long as I came back 15 minutes early (so 45 minutes for walking).

I don't know about the 3 hr test cause I haven't done it but with the 1 hr, they first took blood and then they gave me the drink which I had to drink there and they also didn't let me leave, I had to wait the whole hour in the lab.

Glucose Test
I can't get a live person at Quest but when I get the call center they tell me I can leave. I figured I was misinformed.
No water for 3 hours is rough. I know about fasting for the 3 hour. I made it for the morning.
I think I'm going to change the location. The one I'm going to is in a basement and I'll probably have no signal.

I guess all Quest locations are different then... I went to the Bethpage one and they told me I couldn't leave. I liked that location better than the one by my house because the waiting room is bigger and the one by my house is very small- i figured there was no way I was going to do a 3 hour test in that small space lol.

Re: Glucose Test
Oh my goodness, that sounds awful! I remember getting my 1 hr test and because I get dehydrated so easily I began to shake and black out by the end of it. I can't imagine even attempting 3 hours without water. When is this test usually done? In the 3rd trimester?

Between 24 and 28 weeks usually.
It's not fun and the drink is so sweet that all you want to do is at least sip some water.
This time I had to do 2 hours. I stepped outside to take a phone call for a few minutes but that was about it.

Re: Glucose Test
I just did the 3 hour this morning at Quest. They didn't have any issues with me getting up to use the bathroom, but other than that I didn't leave the waiting room. I felt queasy before the first hour and by the third hour I was itching to run out of there to get fresh air.

Glucose Test
The drink is the least of my worries. I was expecting it to be so horrible at the 1 hour. I downed it. The girls at the desk were shocked how fast I drank it. I think I barely tasted it which it was why it didn't bother me. I hear the 3 hour is sweeter/grosser. I also want to speak to someone to make sure it's VERY cold.
