Basic interview outfit

I am have been working from home in sweats and tanks for 15 years, needless to say if you look in my closet, I have nothing for the working world. I just got let go and I have to interview. I wont be doing anything very corporate that needs a suit but for an interview I need something. I own 2 pairs of black dress pants from express that could work for an interview. What the heck do I wear on top?links or pictures would be geat.

Re: Basic interview outfit

Check out NY and Company. Go on their website to see.
They have a section with pants and jackets that you can buy seperately but that match exactly, colorwise, so you can wear them as a suit.

I really think you should wear a suit on an interview, even if it's not corporate.

Re: Basic interview outfit

If your Express pants are farily new - head in their and pick up a matching black blaser and you'll have a suit.
You can wear that blazer with anything - a dress, jeans etc. It's a staple wardrobe piece, so even if the new job doesn't have a business formal dress code, your $$ won't be wasted.
Or, try the Limited for a dress/skirt/pants and blazer mix and match

I have found the separates to be much more versitile and never look frumpy.
I have to wear a suit to work every day w/ the exception of the summer.

Re: Basic interview outfit

On my interviews I always wore my black Express pants with a black blazer (I got mine at H&M believe it or not) with an Express or NY&Co tailored button down shirt underneath and nice black pumps. On an interview you ALWAYS want to err on the side of overdressed. A suit or suit separates are my go-to.

I agree.

It completely depends on the industry. In healthcare, completely unnecessary. Nice blazer and slacks, or slacks and a nice blouse are perfectly appropriate. Same goes for many/most non-profit.

Basic interview outfit

In healthcare as well and have HR background - we are providing more and more information to recuiters and the community that you need to dress the part and dress to impress - so I to agree to err on the side of overdress and then when and if you get the job you can understand better what the dress expectation is.
Black plants, blouse or button up shirt and a nice blazer - would be the minimal. Doesn't have to be matchy matchy... IMO. just neat and clean.

I disagree - DH is in healthcare and wears a formal suit and tie every day.
I think its always best to dress formally, and let them tell you it's not necessary in the office. First impressions are a huge deal - you alwasy want to make the best one possible.
