I've never read it- I've had my hands full with GOT, but DH raves about it. He was pretty disappointed when he found out MTV picked it up as a series, but it looks surprisingly good!

a lot of fans were disappointed it was MTV. it would have worried me if i didn't know all the other facts (terry approves it, gough/millar are writing and producing, favreau is executive producting) that made me feel a bit better. plus, as they showed the casting choices, I was happy with the choices. i know they took some liberties (like creating new characters), but i never expected a perfect transposition of book to screen, have yet to see one actually.
i'm definitely giving it a try. hope your DH likes it!

Just wondering if your DH watched it and what he thought. I know it doesn't follow the book EXACTLY, but i think they did an excellent job.

We don't have regular cable so he hasn't watched it yet- do you know if it's on Hulu? I want to check it out, too!

Don't know about Hulu, but the premiere is vilable on MTV.com it's the first 2 episodes. I think Terry Brooks' FB page has more details on where you can see it.

the Shannara Chronicles
I read these waaaay back in HS. I was addicted to the series. I didn't remember a lot when I started watching the first episode, but it started to come back to me. I do think Will is exactly what I imagined for Will. But, I gotta say, the acting was HORRIBLE. But, sometimes it takes a while for things to get "comfortable", so I'll stick with it for a little bit and see how it goes. Also, they changed up the setting--not an alternate world, but the future, so you see the ruins of today everywhere. The one thing that concerns me about this is that it's just a visual ploy, and doesn't fold into the plot changes.

Re: the Shannara Chronicles
In the further Shannara books, we find out that it's not an alternate world, but our distant future. Terry Brooks connected the Shannara world to the Word and Void series he has. It's some of his darker writing. If you read the word and void trilogy and then the Genesis of Shannara trilogy, it shows the evolution.
i'd say give it until episode 3. The first two were kind of a quick intro. i thought 3 was much better and the actors finally hit their stride a bit.

ahhhhh--I never read them all, or the other series. I read an article in the paper about them making that change for the show. Maybe they meant making it visually obvious from the beginning??
You know what stinks about getting old? Memory loss. I'm now remembering a scene from a book where the characters are in a run down Manhattan. I'd thought it was an Eddings book, but maybe it was this series? I read so many fantasy series in HS, they've all blended together 20 years later.

lol. I think your memory is just fine! Terry doesn't really write about the East coast. He's a seattle boy, so it's all northwest in his books. Apparently we don't survive in his books
(i realize how unbelievable snobby i sound writing about these books. like i'm a world expert. i think i may have read them too many times! )
