Opinions on VBAC

Thank you to everyone who chimed in. My main reason for trying a VBAC is because I don't want another major surgery and all that recovery time. It is not because I want to experience natural child birth. Both of the doctors in my practice say that their first preference would be a vaginal delivery. The reason for the C-section with my son was like many of you described. I did not dialate past 4 cm. The pitocin was causing the baby's heart rate to drop so they went in to get him. I am a good candidate for a VBAC I just want to make the right decision. There are risks involved for both procedures. Thanks again for all your stories.

Opinions on VBAC

I just had a successful VBAC. I did not use pitocin or epi so baby's heart rate was perfect the whole time. I did not want to recover from a csection again, especially having to take care of my twin toddlers.

Re: Opinions on VBAC

I had a VBAC
I went in with a "whatever's meant to be attitude" My Doctor was fine with it but I couldn't be induced or go past my due date. He also requested the OR report from my csection from my twins from my previous doctor.

My water broke without contractions which my doctor said would be the worst thing to happen to help my chances for a VBAC. My water broke at 9:30 am and I started to feel the contractions at 4ish. (I was actually having them all day) I labored through the night and I got an epi at 8 am. I was only 4 cm...I was not hopeful. From there I dialated quickly and had my DS at9:30 am exactuly 24 hours after my water broke. (My doctor said I could only go 24 hours after my water broke due to increased risk of infection).

For me it was very meaningful because I had to be put under general anesthesia for the birth of my twins. I then developed fevers and couldn't see them for 3 days. It was very traumatic for me.
I did have a moment of slight panic after he was born hoping I was ok.
I wouldn't change anything.

Good luck with your decision.

Opinions on VBAC

I was given the option (plus have time to change my mind) when I went in for my 12 week apt. The NP asked how I felt about it and said since I only had 1 C-section, I was fine for it.
For me, I don't want to and I will be blunt..I am nervous about it. Nothing like crazy just me being scared.

I had a c-section with DS because he was breech. With DD, I had the option to either schedule a c-section for 39 weeks or try for a VBAC and schedule a backup c-section for 41 weeks. The idea of being 41 weeks pregnant wasn't appealing to me, so I scheduled a repeat c for 39 weeks.

Anyway, I went into labor at 37w6d. At the hospital they were going to get the OR ready but I said if the baby was ok, I wanted to try a VBAC, and I did have a successful VBAC.

Having experienced both, I'm glad I did the VBAC. I had a relatively easy recovery after my c-section but the VBAC recovery was MUCH easier. I'm glad I did it. I don't think we'll have any more children, but if we do, I'd do the VBAC again.

ETA: For all of the "it's dangerous" comments - my OB told me there was a 1% chance of my scar rupturing. That's 99% chance it would be fine (and it was!). Major surgery is more dangerous than a VBAC, in most (not all) cases.

Opinions on VBAC

I am not doing it for the fact I don't want to have the same birth experience. I had a failed induction that ended in c/s. I don't want to go through the same labor that ends in the same result. I feel as though I had a longer recovery because of it. I'm hopeful that by electing a c/s it will be a better recovery.

Same exact reason for me. Also, it will be much easier to plan child care for DD with a scheduled birth.

I'm bias because I specialize in medical malpractice. I have seen all the bad outcomes of a VBAC based on my specialty. There is a reason why many OB/GYNs refuse to consider them. The insurance is sky high based on the risks.

I will also add that a lot of the bad outcomes are due to the mother refusing to consent to the c-section until it is too late b/c they have it in their heads that they want a VBAC.

It's not worth the risk IMO. While I personally know someone who had a successful VBAC, I believe that the risks are greater and outweigh the reward.

Opinions on VBAC

What a terrible thing to say that a VBAC is selfish!! A C-section is major surgery that carries major risks. I had a scheduled C-section with my first and my OB has given me the choice with my second. C-sections are no walk in the park and the recovery is very difficult especially if you have another child to tend to while healing and not just an infant, as if that wasn't enough work. We went over the risks and according to him the risk for things like uterine rupture is less than 1%. There will always be horror stories out there for natural birth, c-section, home birth etc...The most important thing is that you and your partner along with your doctor or midwife make the best decision for you and baby. Everyone has an opinion and you should not be frightened or persuaded by the negative comments on a chat board. Selfish...shheeeesh!!!

You asked! I'll never understand why. You have a scar already, you already know what to expect. why push out the baby and have other / different issues? I don't think you are missing a thing.

Opinions on VBAC

I wanted a vbac but my dr wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks so I ended up with a section.
I still regret not having one. My recovery sucked. If I ever get pregnant again I will find a different provider and try again.
Do your research. Vbac is less risky than repeat c.

Re: Opinions on VBAC

I had a vba2c, and it was an amazing g experience. My recovery was night and day to my sections. There was nothing selfish about my decision, quite the contrary. My DD was born with cancer, I need to preserve my ability to have more children. After extensive research, and meeting and consulting with top perinatologist, OB's and other doctors, a another trial for a vbac was the best way to go. I was heavily monitored, as was baby. There are just as many, if not more risks with sections. In fact a friend of mine nearly died from one, wound up septic and lost body parts. I am not saying sections are bad, but there is a lot of misinformation about sections, and vbacs. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Ets if you decide on a vbac make sure your OB is 100% supportive. I went for a vbac with my second and the OB I used was not as vbac friendly as she lead me to believe. The OB I had this time was so supportive as was the whole staff. When I was in recovery OB's were coming in and high fiving me. Chat Icon

I'm sure it's not about a scar. A c-section is major surgery that comes along with a ton of risks by itself.
If you and your doctor are confident in your body and how it healed, I would avoid another surgery at all costs.

Re: Opinions on VBAC

I just had a semi unplanned VBAC about 9 hours ago! My first csection was due solely to the fact that DS was too big and I couldn't push him out after 3 hours of trying (he was 10lb9oz). This baby came three weeks early, was measuring smaller and by the time a dr was able to administer any medication I was already at 7cm so after speaking to the medical team, they actually encouraged me to try a VBAC. My epidural didn't fully take both times they administered it as well as the two doses of alternate meds they tried to give me and it hurt like a ***** but wow, what an amazing experience. I seriously went from not really wanting a VBAC to feeling like superwoman when all was said and done. I say follow your Drs advice and your heart and it will all be fine!

My first was a v birth and second was a c section after a failed induction. Both times I was induced bc my water broke. If I were to have another one (although we are done) I would get another c section, mainly because I don't want to have to go through what I went through with my dd- I was induced and was in a lot of pain but never progressed (cord was wrapped around her) so ended up with a c section anyway.

according to ACOG, vbacs are usually as safe or safer than a second csection. The risks with vbac are about half of the risk associated with labor induction/augmentation. Its a personal decision, but please do not believe its dangerous to your baby (unless something specific to your case says so).
The pro of having a csection imo is being able to have a scheduled delivery and avoiding the possibility of laboring and then having a csection, like you did the first time. But more than 60 perc of vbac attempts are successful.

The con is a longer, harder recovery. Including being in the hospital longer while you have your first child at home. I hated my csection so to me its worth it to try the vbac.

Also i had a scheduled date for my csection with ds1 (breech) and i went into labor 6 days before my csection appointment so the scheduling aspect doesnt always work out.

Theres no wrong answer, mama. Also we cant see into a crystal ball and know what will happen. We just take our best guess. If you want a vbac, please find a dr or midwife who is experienced and supportive with them.

Im an attorney. The reason its easier to sue after a vbac than a csection with complications have more to do with the nature of the law than the medical outcomes, ie we expect complications from surgery. Medical outcones are not better with csections. Its an interesting topic. Just because vbacs bring more liability to the dr doesnt make them more dangerous. Im sure you know what im talking about. Plus an obgyn makes more $ off a surgery as does the hospital so its a win/win for them. Not necessarily for mom.
