Ordering Granite from a Stone Yard?

So I'm confused about this. My contractor recommended a stone yard where he can buy wholesale and we are going to look. But I noticed online that they give you the size of the slabs - do you just buy the entire slab? What if the slab isn't big enough? Do you have to buy 2 slabs? Or do they cut what you need from a second slab? I'm so confused on how this works, does anyone know?

We used a granite fabricator who actually cut and put the granite in place but I had to go to the granite yard to select my slab. When I went to the yard they asked me which fabricator I was working with and then they worked out all of the details. I think you need that middle man. (Or your contractor?) to determine how many slabs you will need and then cut the granite for you.

You contractor gives you the dimensions. You then choose a fabricator , who then determines how many slabs you need and they send you to the granite places that they use most.

You need the fabricator to do the cutting. Granite yard is just the place to pick out the stone.

We choose our granite at a stone yard and they also cut it for us. They showed us pieces that work for the amount of granite we were looking to have installed.

We brought the dimensions that we needed, a drawer front, and a floor tile with us to the granite store. We walked through the slabs and they showed us items in our price range. Once we selected our slab, they templates it so we could see where they would cut it. If there was something we wanted to avoid or highlight they marked it on the actual slab chosen.
