Anyone have a kid who was not 100% potty trained when they started kindergarten?

DS is going into a traditional classroom setting. He is not fully potty trained. At daycare and at home we set a timer and he goes everytime it goes off. He doesn't have accidents, well not many.

However, he generally is not proactive. If the timer doesn't go off or if we don't remind him to go, he will very rarely go on his own.

I'm going to buy the same timer and talk to his K teacher about it, maybe get it added to his IEP.

Anyone have this issue?

Also, number 2 is usually at night so it hasn't been an issue at daycare BUT he doesn't make it to the bathroom for that very often. As long as he stays on the same schedule it shouldn't be a problem and we will continue to work on it at home.

Has anyone else dealt with this in elementary school?

Yup, this was my son. Even had a few accidents into 1st grade. The teachers were mostly accepting. I had told them they need to remind him to go.

When I worked in a K room the teacher had 2 set times that the whole class tried the bathroom. One was 2 hours into the day and the other 3 hours later an hour before they went home.
If he in a typical class they probably won't use a timer because it will be distracting. If you got him his own vibrating timer would he wear it? Maybe then he can just go every time it goes off?
Also make sure he can change him self in case of accidents. Most teachers or the nurse will help with buttons and zippers and making sure everything goes on the right way but they can't physical change your child. At least those are the rules where I work.

Does he have an aide? Then she can remind him. A gen ed teacher most of the time is not going to remind kids to go to the bathroom. Can you teach him to go at certain times of the day, such as on the way to lunch or on the way to a special?

My DS is 5.5 years old and 95% potty trained during the day. It has taken him three years to get to this point. Try the rewards chart ... it has helped big time.

At night he wears overnight underwear. We have not started training for that yet because he does come into our bed during the night and I need to start potty training my younger child. I think we have to get him to stay in his own bed at night first.
