breastfeeding support?
As a first time mom, what resources (preferably free or cheap as $ is tight) are available for breastfeeding moms? Have you used them and were you happy with it?
I seriously have no clue what I'm doing.

Re: breastfeeding support?
The hospital and your pediatrician should have a lactation consultant that can help you for no charge. Choose a pediatrician that is very breastfeeding friendly. We use peconic pediatrics, which are part of allied physicians and very pro breastfeeding

Re: breastfeeding support?
Also ask at your hospital, many have breastfeeding support groups for after you leave. I found a wonderful one (lead by a lactation consultant) that was a huge help when I was having issues. I cannot recommend this enough! The moms where great too!

This is true for LIJ, too! I think it's Tuesdays.

Re: breastfeeding support?
So many hospitals have BF support groups that meet weekly, and her held by an LC. I think most if not all of the NS-LIJ hospitals do. Even if you didn't deliver there, you can still go.
I went to the one at Southside after I had my first DD. I went every week whether I was struggling that week or not (which in the beginning I was), sometimes it helps just listening and being prepared for what may come up. It's also great to connect with other new moms going through the same thing. Highly recommend. I think La Leche does free meetings too, never really looked into it because I loved the LC at Southside.

Don't be afraid to ask your nurses for help and advice while you're in the hospital with your newborn. Also ask for the lactation consultant. That was very helpful for me getting started.
