Talking to your kids about what happened in Paris

My DS is 10, and as much as I want to shield him from the news and these scary events, I knew I needed to talk to him about what happened in Paris.... Same as I knew when he was little and the Sandy Hook school thing happened. I just don't know how, because I don't want him to feel afraid, I want him to feel safe.

I wonder how other moms or parents did it, if they did it.

I read an article this morning in common sense media, and we went from there. We explained what happened, we said that it was an isolated event but we wanted for him to hear about it from us, and we tried to reassure him that he was safe.

I just feel sad that at this young age they need to know of the horrible things happening around us Chat Icon

At 10, it is absolutely necessary to let him know what is going on around the world.

No need to show the gruesome pictures and videos but explain who Isis is and what they do and stand for.

I agree that they need to have an understand. They may have spoken about it in school too-I teach 6th and we do weekly current events discussions. I'm sure this will come up next week

My 2nd grader knows all about it. He's seen CNN. I don't hide things and we have open and honest talks about it.

I remember being around 10 during the Gulf War. Obviously, there was a lot of information about it on the news and in the paper. I had an understanding of it, NOT a fear.

Hopefully, our kids will not be overwhelmed by the situation. It's a lot to handle, even for adults.

Talking to your kids about what happened in Paris

My daughter just turned 9 and we spoke briefly about it this morning. I actually spoke to her this year about 9/11 and gave a brief overview of what happened and about terrorists, etc so she already had a basic knowledge. I also made sure to have her understand if she had any questions to ask me and not to bring it up with classmates unless an adult was there.

My daughter is 8 and I have not told her anything about it. We don't watch the news and haven't had any discussions about it in front of her. If she comes home from school asking about it, I will gladly give her age-appropriate info, but I personally do not see the point in opening up that side of the world to her just yet.

I feel the same. I feel it can provide no good to bring it up, only fear. Yet it's so horrible it can't be talked about in a blaise manner either. It's hard for even adults to grasp. If they unfortunately hear from someone else, then I would address it. If they lost someone directly, then of course, there would be no choice but to address it. Otherwise, I would not speak about it to young children b/c there is nothing good that can come out of knowing such sick people did this to such innocent people when the reality is we cannot stop these kind of things nor control them.

At around age 10 and up, I do think it's more necessary to speak about since they will hear it from peers or in school.

My son is 8 and he has heard all the things in the news since he was little - he even heard something about sandy Hook (he was in kindergarten) and wanted to know the information, so I told him. Hiding anything from him just makes the story scarier to him. i tell him the facts. He finds terrorist stories kind of interesting, and not scary.
