Summer for Tweens
So if you work full time and have no family what do you do with a 13 yo? The travel camps I looked at are pricey!

Re: Summer for Tweens
My Stepson stood home by himself. He would go back and forth from his moms to ours. When he was with us, I was home. But he did stay by himself at his moms.

Re: Summer for Tweens
I'm trying to figure this out myself. Last summer was the first summer we didn't do camp, because we were away 4 weeks. This summer she's figniting me on the camp thing....

Summer for Tweens
Mine stayed home. But be prepared they will sleep until noon and spend the rest of the day online. Try to arrange as many get togethers as you can with kids who's parent doesn't work.
It's a tough age and there's much mom guilt leaving them home all day.

Re: Summer for Tweens
DS won't be 13 till Aug. He is a Boy Scout so he will go to Boy Scout sleep away camp for 2 weeks,
I'll take one week off doubt we will go away just do local stuff
If I can swing the $$ one week of travel camp
The remaining time he will be in a local day camp as a CIT - which I hope he loves so I can keep him interested in returning for a few more years.

Yes. A CIT for a local camp would go to camp for free and hopefully get tips at the end of the summer. For volunteer work, I would hope it would be a few days a week or a half day if someone could drive and pick them up.

Re: Summer for Tweens
I have a gaggle of 14 year olds who work in my office every summer. THey are people who work here's kids.
I teach them to file and they run errands. I fully intend on having my son and my BF's son do it when they're the correct age

This is what I did at that age. A few days a week at my mom's office doing clerical stuff, filing, etc

Re: Summer for Tweens
The YMCA has a an semi-all day camp by me and CITs are as young as 14 that I know of. Not sure if its 13 too but you could check. I went to sleep away camp for part of the summer at 13 and loved it.

Re: Summer for Tweens
When I was that age I volunteered at our local church's summer camp program. I think it ran 6 weeks in the summer from 9-12 so it wasn't a full day. Basically we were unpaid camp counselors.
ETA I volunteered with friends whose parents also worked during the day but we lived close enough to the church that we just walked every day.

At all the camps my kids have gone to, the CIT's still had to pay for camp, they just got a 10% discount. Which to me is a ripoff, since they make the CIT's do all the grunt work. So, make my kid a slave for the summer and I still have to pay? No thank you! I can put him to work at home for free

I am pretty sure the camp my kids went to also charges them and it was a far distance for me to bring them before I went to work and they only worked part time so they would need a ride home in the middle of the day.

Re: Summer for Tweens
I did basketball camp, tennis camp, horseback riding camp, a travel camp through our church, among other sports-related and active-related programs. My town offered tons of stuff for young people to do over the summer at a very reasonable cost because it was through the town so a certain amount of our tax dollars went to fund it. It is one of the things I love most about living in my town and I'm glad I stayed so my son can take advantage.
Also, around that age, I began working. At first I was babysitting via my church (put my name on a list there) and parishioners would call and get babysitter recs off the list. Then, as I got a little older I started working - a pizza place, an ice cream shop. And it wasn't just summer - I worked all year long... Usually a few days a week when I wasn't in after-school sports plus weekends and when I was in after-school sports then I worked just on the weekends around my sports/game schedule.

My DD will be a CIT, she will go to camp a full 8 weeks, for free. But I'm in new jersey. Maybe its different here.
