Wood tile floors, what about the stairs?

I'm renovating my family room (well, I'm hiring someone to do it. ) I live in a split and my family room is off the kitchen, down a short flight of stairs. The den and stairs are currently carpeted. It is fugly and has to go. I don't have the budget to replace the staircase. I really want to put wood tile down instead of new carpet. But what do I do with the stairs? Can I carpet the stairs and put wood tile in the family room, or will that look weird?

what is underneath the stairs? I also live in a split- I have oak hardwood on the steps but our den has dark colored laminate and it is not noticeable.

we just did this in our split.

The stairs had carpet on them and underneath they were destroyed. We used "stair skins" - you can get them at lowes or home depot. They're like veneers that go over the stair treads.

They look great.

What kind of flooring is at the top of the stairs? Is it also carpet? If you're installing wood tile downstairs in the family room, you could try doing hardwood stairs and matching the stain as closely as possible to the tile you select. Adding a runner to the steps over the hardwood could disguise the difference between the two some more.

Unless you have carpet at the top of the stairs too, I would avoid putting it on the steps. It will most likely make the spaces look choppy.
