i just heard from friends that their 15 and 16 yr olds will go in a group and take Uber to get them to sporting events at Barclays..I was shocked to hear this but you can't judge anyone. It's a different world out there....

At 16 I had a driver's license and a car. Why would taking a cab at the same age be shocking?

Re: How old to come home alone?

My daughter is 5th grade & 10 years old (1st year of middle school for our district). She is alone for 15 minutes after I leave for work in the morning. I call or text her daily to check she's walking to the bus stop. In the afternoons she walks home from the bus stop 4 houses down the block & lets herself in the house. She's home about 20 minutes before one of her grandparents arrives to meet her & get my 1st grader from his elementary bus.

This is her first year doing this & it's been a success. She's mature. I will also leave her alone for short errands. I've even let her babysit my younger one for 15 minute spurts while I run to the corner post office or pizza place. I was babysitting other people's kids at 11 for hours on end.

I am not the poster you quoted but I can see the difference between the two.

When the teen is the driver they are at least in control of their own car.

If a teen is taking Uber they are at someone else's mercy.

Plus any Uber like service sort of freaks me out in general. It seems too easy to become a driver.

Personally, with my child driving now, I would feel safer with them riding in a car than driving.
I don't see the difference between Uber and them going in someone else's car who is driving them around.

Re: How old to come home alone?

DD will be turning 10 and I am definately not ready to leave her alone. Maybe towards the end of middle school for a short while (12/13?) but not yet.

Re: How old to come home alone?

DS is in 3rd grade and I have been leaving him for short periods of time since last year.

This year we leave him for about 30 minutes alone.

He goes to aftercare at his school but on the days when I am home I have him take the bus home and always meet him at the stop. The other day the bus came early and I met him on the way to the bus without expecting it - turns out the driver lets the kids off with no parents around BUT we live in guam and kids roam everywhere around here. I think he would be OK being on his own next year for an hour or 2 but I can't do it to him yet. I admit that I'm not ready. I let him go out by himself to friends houses but the thought of him coming home to an empty house just makes me sad. He is very mature and responsible but he also is very attached to us and i know he would be lonely and worry about us until we got home.

NYS Social Services recommends 12-13 being the youngest!

Re: How old to come home alone?

wow, I really think it depends on the kid too. I DO NOT feel comfortable leaving a 3rd or 4th grader home alone.

Re: How old to come home alone?

I was babysitting infants at 13 and taking 2 city buses each way in Jr high in queens and my parents were very over protective. I feel like these experiences helped develop my common sense. I would like to say that I will probably allow my oldest to stay at home around 5th grade while I run a quick errand. We will see how it goes, because he will have another sibling to watch as well.

With Uber you can log into the ap, see where the car is exactly on the map, and know when your child arrives at the destination. No cash is changing hands either. Then again i dont consider a 16 yr old a child. When i was 15 I didnt drive, but walked all over town to get where i needed to go, and had an after school JOB.
