First time home buyer programs
Please let me know about any programs or grants out there for 1st time home buyers. When my late husband and I looked to buy a home a few years back we had too much debt and couldn't swing a decent mortgage. Now I am starting to look again and need all the help I can get. Talk to me about FHA loans. Anything that can help me get a home for me and my son.

First time home buyer programs
I would contact the LIHP. I have heard they have lots of programs out there. I think you have to make under $67k? Something like that? I remember reading a few years back so it may have changed? Try SONYMA online as well but u have heard that LIHP is most helpful

Is there any particular reason you'd like a home? Have you thought of all of the downsides to homeownership? I'm not trying to be negative, but they are a money pit and can be a lot to maintain and so many unexpected costs and repairs can crop up. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it can be hard to manage on your own. Again, not trying to be negative.
As pp said, I would reach out to the Long Island housing partnership. They are based in Hauppauge, I believe. They sometimes have seminars for first time home buyers (if I recall correctly).

Because I am tired of renting something I will never own. I am tired of crappy land lords. My son needs a place to call his own... I am ready for a place of my own. With all the rent I have paid in the almost 15 years I have been out of my parents house, I could have already bought a house!!!

First time home buyer programs
i did a SONYMA one through HSBC... the bank itself kinda sucks to be honest, but the program was fairly simple. If you call the bank, they basically set it all up for you. I *THINK* we had to open an account with them, save $1700 or something like that over the course of a year or so, and then we received a $7500 grant towards the down payment. You couldn't have a combined income over a certain amount, and you could not have owned any co-ops, condos, homes, etc. prior.

Contact CDC LI in Centereach. You can get a $10,000 grant with a bunch of stipulations (under like $399K or something like that) and I think the income limits are around 100k. I have a family member who went there, but they ended up not going that route
