Identity Theft
Last night my husband gets a hotel confirmation email for a booking in Denver, CO. He hadnt made the hotel reservation , nor would ever since I handle all the billing, bookings etc in our household. So I call the hotel and a woman tells me oh yes I just took the reservation it was by his daughter. Um, we dont have a daughter ...she says perhaps daughter in law...I told her we are in NY and have small kids (sons). She tells me the person making the resevation in my husbands name put it on her card and it came from California. The reservation was being held on an AMEX (we dont own an AMEX card ) but that she would pay with a different card upon arrival. I went into panic mode. They put an alert out on our names to check ID etc when this person came into hotel. I havent stayed at this chain of hotels in a loooong time. So needless to say Im in panic mode now and not sure what to do. I have never had this happen before.
* I just posted this to the wrong board...sorry.

Re: Identity Theft
So she didn't use his credit card number? Just his name? And his email address?
That is so strange

Yes, just to hold the room. But stated that he would pay when he arrived with a different card. LOL, its funny because my husband is clueless when it comes to booking or dealing with anything...not that he is clueless, he leaves everything for me to handle LOL. We have no friends/family or dealings with anyone in California nor Colorado. Scary

Just so weird because what benefit does that serve them? They aren't using his card. Also, don't you have to show photo ID when checking in to any hotel? How would they swing that?

Re: Identity Theft
Weird.
Is it possible that your husband's name and email address are common?
As in, his name is John Smith and his email is [email protected] perhaps the person who booked it is also named John Smith with an email address of [email protected]?

Re: Identity Theft
You can freeze or cancel your cards. That would stop them. We have had some fraud issues. Our cc companies called us when some fishy charges were made in Canada and California. They went through several charges on he cards and we had to deny several and then watch our statements for the next month. We denied the charges the people made and froze and then cancelled those cards. They issued us new cards pretty quickly. You can also contact the 3 credit companies and have a watch put on your credit. Good luck!

Re: Identity Theft
You said you haven't stayed in their hotels in a long time, so you were already in their system. I'm sure someone called up and just gave their name, the receptionist typed it in wrong and said ok, I found your account. It's probably just an honest mistake.
If they don't have your SSN ... there isn't really anything they can do in the way of fraud anyway. They said they would pay with an amex and you don't have one so it's not like they are trying to stick you with the bill. If you want to be safe, run your credit and make sure there aren't accounts open that you don't know of.
