Got the job- Need advice (DOE people)
So I got the LI position! I am so so excited to start, and I am really looking forward to being close to home. I had asked about this awhile ago, but baby brain has gotten the best of me and I've forgotten what everyone has said lol. I had a few questions for anyone who has switched positions, and how they went about it.
1. Do you still receive your health benefits and pay throughout the summer if you tell your principal you're leaving the DOE at the end of the school year? If so, when did the pay/benefits stop?
2. If you waited to tell your principal until July/August that you are not returning, did you just e-mail/call? Or was there some sort of a form you needed to complete?
3. What happens to your leftover CAR days?
4. If you contributed to the NYC TDA, did the money stay in there, or were you able to transfer it somewhere else?
Thank you for any/all help! I tried to call my UFT borough office, but nobody answered and the phone was ringing for over 15 mins.. I can ask the UFT rep in my building, but she is a bit of a chatter box and I am not sure if I can trust her

Re: Got the job- Need advice (DOE people)
If you can't trust your building rep, who is your district rep? I'd call/email them.
I think your CAR days disappear? They aren't going to transfer to LI.
Your summer checks are yours. You earned it - the DOE just spreads our checks out over 12 months. Not sure when your insurance coverage stops. (Add that to your list of questions for the district rep!)
Keep in mind that Open Market closes in early August (the 8th I think?) If you know you're leaving, let your principal know before that so they have time to fill your spot.

You should resign effective close of business the day before you are contracted to start on Long Island. That way your benefits will be effective until that date.
2. If you waited to tell your principal until July/August that you are not returning, did you just e-mail/call? Or was there some sort of a form you needed to complete?
You only need to give 30 days notice. You simply send over a signed letter as an email attachment or by certified mail. I hereby resign from the Department of Education effective ____. Sincerely, (your signature) 3. What happens to your leftover CAR days?
You get paid for half of them up to 200 days by giving this form to your payroll secretary http://www.uft.org/files/attachments/op44-termination-pay.pdf
4. If you contributed to the NYC TDA, did the money stay in there, or were you able to transfer it somewhere else?
You fill this out and choose what option is best for you https://www.trsnyc.org/ASPENMemberPro/WebContent/forms/pdf/TD32.pdf
Welcome to Long Island teaching!

Thanks for the help guys! I am going to print out those forms now, and I will e-mail them over to my payroll secretary/principal sometime in early/mid July :)
