Another demo lesson question
I have a demo in a 3rd grade class in NYC. 32 kids, they want a reading lesson. I was going to do something simple with finding the main idea.
Heres the catch... they specifically said NO technology is to be used. No smartboard... nothing....
HELP!!!!
Any ideas? 30-40 minutes

Another demo lesson question
maybe print out reading passages and bring scaffolds, like highlighters and charts that will help them find the main idea?
I wonder why they said no technology.

Re: Another demo lesson question
I don't know. I emailed the principal to ask if I would have access to a SmartBoard and he said that each classroom has one but that he does NOT want me to use it for a demo lesson. I would think that he would want to see that I know how to use technology in a classroom?
Ugh.. I am a nervous wreck!

No tech, wow that's hard nowadays. Hopefully you have some chart paper and worksheets ready to go. I've done some inference work in a demo before for reading.
Good luck!!

Re: Another demo lesson question
It's so hard when you don't know the kids. IMO You should make sure there is room for differentiation and choice. That is huge! There should be entry points for all learners. So if you are working on main idea maybe focus in a particular text type (i.e. Finding the main idea in a fictional passage like a myth as opposed to a non fiction piece) and have different levels of text within the grade band in that particular genre for independent work. Try not to make it too teacher centered and be prepared with something small group for struggling learners. Check the standards for the grade level and make sure you are focused on one in particular. They are probably looking to see how you do without it because of how often people felt on it, like with teachers pay teachers. Good luck!

Re: Another demo lesson question
I'm doing a newspaper article... age appropriate, about fostering animals... I am removing the headline and giving each student a copy of it. I am having them read the first paragraph only and hi-light what they think are key words. Then doing a read through as a class, then breaking into groups to come up with the main idea. Then writing their own headlines.
Its simple and one I've done before.
I understand why they don't want technology... its too easy to lift a lesson and make it look all fancy. This way its all me. Its nerve wracking as hell though.
