4th grade Demo lesson on Monday, any help appreciated!!
Hey ladies,
I interviewed on wednesday for a 4th grade catholic school position. She seemed to like me, I think it went well. I got to show her some of my past lessons with pics/students work. She looked surprised and very pleased that I brought that stuff with me.
I get a call today from the secretary that the principal wants me to do a demo lesson on mon morning. No specific subject, its up to me.
Do you guys think she likes me for the job and just wants to confirm or is she between 2 people? The job starts immediately, as soon as tuesday.
Any ideas? I know I'd rather to a Language Arts or SS lesson. I was thinking *poetry? * a read aloud?
Thoughts?

do you know if they use TC? Maybe a TC mini lesson would be a good option?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Im pretty sure they dont use TC. I was thinking though, even if they dont, cant I just teach a reading strategy? The thing is they wouldnt have their leveled book to go back to. So maybe have a short story (1 page) on a handout, they could apply the reading strategy to that?? What do you think?
My other idea was to teach them a certain kind of poem (haiku, etc). They'll learn the format, we'll do one together. Then they can go back to their seats and write one. Share w/a partner, etc.?
Those are my 2 ideas. Still dont know what to do!

Im not a classroom teacher, but I think one of the most important things is to be able to keep the interest of the class. Make them love you without going overboard where they treat you like a fellow classmate. Classroom management is huge.
What about teaching a SS lesson and then playing something like SS jeopardy. Make a game out of it. Divide the class in 2 and ask questions. Any time someone forgets to raise their hand of talks out of turn give the other team a point etc. That way the kids are havign fun, learning/reviewing and the class is quiet and engaged? IDK LOL I teach Phys Ed LOL

whatever you decide to do, make sure you implement "gradual release". Model, the some partner work, then independent work, followed by a whole class share.
I would also consider some kind of "tiered" independent work.
these are all the latest buzz words.
also, consider using the common core standards instead of the NYS standards.

You want to do something Literacy based. Catholic schools are very big on structure and application.
I would try Diamonte poems because it brings in parts of speech and poetry.
Good Luck! I taught in Catholic schools for 10 yrs and it was the BEST time of my life!
