Work out people

I'm in terrible shape. I was never really in shape but I didn't exercise in the slightest during my pregnancy. I'm 3 months pp and I have his christening in August. I'm 12 lbs from prepregnancy weight and need to tone up as well. What do I start with?

Re: Work out people

I have not been as good as I used to, but I always start with just walking and light weight toning. It's summer and perfect time to get out with the baby. Start out twice a day for walks. Cut out the sugar and dairy and drink lots of water.
There are some great YouTube videos for working out with some light weights for toning arms and legs. You can join a gym and take classes.
I take a class at the local gymnastics with a woman that does toning classes a few times a week for $5 a class. THis is in NJ where I live, but see what they have locally by you.
Good luck and stick with it!!

I agree with PP start walking! Get an activity tracker or free app and aim for 10k steps a day. Alternatively, do some jogging in between if you can.

Then I suggest HIIT workouts even short 15 min ones. Get some 5-15 lb weights depending on what your strength is.

The best shape I was ever in is when I worked out 4 days a week in my mid-30s after kids. The workouts were 20 min jog then a 30 min Jillian Michael video like 30 day shred.

I also never ate after 7pm!

Now that I am 40 I think nutrition is larger than excerciae for weight maintenance. I drink tons of water and load up on fruits and veggies.

More recently I use fitnessblender.com.

As far as losing weight goes I don't find that working out really helps. It will help tone you but diet is everything when it comes to weight loss. I use the app LoseIt. It's not necessarily the most healthy way to lose weight because it's strictly calorie based but it's a start.

As the other posters suggested start with walking or jogging and then try to build up to running. Also if you can get a 9 or 12 lb body bar and do some arm and leg work with that it's good. You can also find a ton of apps that have quick workouts. You can combine a few of those to get a half hour work out and combine that with 30 minutes of cardio.

I had my 2nd baby back in February and I agree with the above poster. Take long power walks with the stroller. That's what I did with my first but now I'm pushing a double stroller so I use more upper body. I go from psrk to park & just walk laps. I also take strength classes & kickboxing at a gym. I watch my diet and eat fruits, veggies, salads & grill my food.

Would you start running? Its easy to go because you can go whenever you DH gets home. Or get a jogging stroller.

As far as diet goes, I got rid of my baby weight the summer after having DC2 by grilling a lot. I just ate a lot of fish and chicken and veggies and it came off pretty quickly.

Re: Work out people

Like a pp said, a healthy diet is the number one factor in weight loss. And people don't love to hear this, but in terms of working out, weight training is the best all around. And not light weight training. Good luck and do something you enjoy!

This!

Diet is #1. Download My Fitness Pal App. Fill out info and follow calories it gives per day. Log your food in as well. You don't realize how much you eat until you're tracking it.

Get your diet straight for at least a week. Trying to do too much at once can be overwhelming and you may not stick to it.

Then start with 30 min a day walk.

Then add weights in. Like the PP I quoted, go heavier on the weights. I didn't know this myself and wasn't getting any real results from the light weights I was using. Just started with a. Trainer at the gym and she has me lifting heavy. Sometimes my full body weight. 3 sessions later and I'm already seeing more definition.

First thing is get your diet under control. From now til August there is a very good chance to be where you want to if you stick to a plan.

You got this!!

OP said she wants to get into shape and tone. If she said she just wants to lose 12 pounds I agree eat less/less calories!

Re: Work out people

Jillian Michaels Beginner shred DVD
Excellent for beginners, people who used to work out but stopped for a long time.
I love it
It's all about using weights to tone up with some light cardio mixed in
And the best part, it's only 20 minutes a day, so you don't feel like you have to commit to a ton of time each day. I find it easier to say, ok, 20 min and i"ll be done.

I know but to get in shape and tone, you need to lose some weight covering the muscles. When I first lost weight, before starting weights, I saw muscle I didn't know I had!

Weights and cardio. I do Zumba classes and total body conditioning classes. They are fabulous! And watch what you are eating as well. Less carbs.

Re: Work out people

Check out Melissa Bender. She has a free website and the programs are free too. I used to do fitnessblender but didn't want to pay for the programs. Melissa Bender is all free. I liked her 30 day challenges since they are about 15 min each round. You can repeat if you have time or just do one round.
