Question about peanut free and tree nut free foods
DD does not have an allergy but there is at least one child in my DD's class that has a peanut allergy so they said no foods with peanuts, peanut oils or tree nuts.
Do I need to look on labels for things that are made in a peanut free factory or if it doesn't contain peanuts or tree nut ingredients it's good?
Coconuts are technically not a tree nut but I was just looking for ideas on tree free foods I can send her with and I see that the FDA has classified it as a tree nut anyway. That means coconut products are out too?

Will the child actually be eating food brought in "from the outside?" If so, you should look for products completely nut-free--no "made in the same facility" etc. My son has nut allergies and we do not allow him to eat food brought in by others (with some exceptions that we have pre-approved), so if this is the case, I would say you could bring in items with warnings as long as they actually do not contain nuts because there's really no risk of cross-contamination since the kid would not actually be ingesting the food. KWIM?
My kid can eat coconut despite a tree nut allergy, so maybe talk to the teacher or the parent of the nut allergic child?

Thanks! I meant for my daughter's lunch. There were other guidelines about bringing in food for the whole class for birthdays.
There was some general information from the nurse about allergies and it scared the crap out of me because it talked about how someone with a severe allergy could have a reaction from touching something that had touched the allergen or even breathing the air from a bag of peanuts for example. I don't want to put anyone at risk.
Since it's for my DD's lunch, I will just make sure there are not peanut or tree nuts/oils etc in actual food.

I think it's really nice of you to be concerned.
Ask the teacher or school nurse to be sure but most schools have a separate peanut free lunch table for students who are peanut free anyway, so your child can bring whatever they want under those circumstances.

My son's school doesn't have a separate table and I'm glad b/c I don't want my son to feel distant from his classroom. They have specific seats for the allergy kids and kids that bring pb&j have to sit at the other end of the table (they're long row tables).
For OP's daughter's lunch - I think you'll be ok as long as it doesn't contain nut ingredients. There are many things that are made in the same facility but don't really have that ingredient. For example, candy corn is made in the same facility, but I would be ok if a kid was eating it and was sitting next to my son (as long as they didn't try to share food).
I know there are laws against getting the information, but it would be helpful to know if the allergy child was contact allergic or air allergic. If it's just contact, you could safely send almost anything that's made in the same facility (without the actual nut ingredient) and have your child wash hands and drink after eating. If it's air contact - that's a whole other issue.

Coconut is a separate allergy. My son's friend has a coconut allergy while others I know with peanut/tree nut do not. And with the popularity of coconut oil in various things, it's proving to be very difficult for my friend.
We have nut free classrooms - we are just not supposed to bring in anything that does or "may" contain nuts for our kids snacks. We are allowed to bring in something that is processed in a facility that handles nuts.
For lunch - the kids eating nut products sit at a separate table. They don't separate the children with allergies as some schools do.

Pretty much this. Last year no, but this year we got a note home that the classroom is nut free. I guess it depends on if there is a child with an allergy in that classroom. It just said do not send in any snacks that contain peanuts or tree nuts- nothing about the facility it is produced in- and it said to remind your child to not share their snacks.
At lunch if they want to bring in peanut butter or something they have to go sit at the peanut table.
I just don't send it in. There are so many other options to send, I figure why bother with the peanut butter at all. She doesn't need it.
(But i could live without ever eating peanut butter or having it in my house again. Not a fan)

DD's classroom is nut free, but the school is not. We just had back to school night and were only told to make sure food items sent in for morning snack do not contain nuts. There was no mention of making sure what we sent in was not produced in a factory that also produced items made with nuts.
