Self contained classroom to gifted and talented?
Ok. I realize this probably sounds nuts as all 3 of my children receive services.
One of my twins in kindergarten is in a self-contained 12:1:1 class. Academics so far have come easy to him. He is reading at least on 2nd grade level (teacher hasn't officially tested yet). He was put in this setting because of lack of self control and focus issues. Plus his socialization around kids his age needs work (he is great with older kids).
He flies through his homework and asks for more. He wants to do his twin's hw (who hates doing hw and wants his brother to do it so we battle over this).
Anyway, we were talking about if this setting is appropriate and his teacher said he is really regulating emotions and doing amazing. We're only a month into school. His twin is in ICT and that was another concern (I didn't want them together if it could be avoided).
She asked if we ever thought about having him take the gifted and talented test. We were shocked. She thinks he could do it and he could still get services if he needs them. The test isn't until spring for 1st grade so we have plenty of time to think about it. We'll probably just let him take it because why not?
It's early in the year and who knows what will happen, but anyone else ever go through this? I just want to do whatever is best for him. Looking for some advice.

glad to hear he is doing so well! I have not experienced.it personally as a parent or as a special ed. teacher, but there are kids that can be classified as 2e. (twice exceptional). essentially 2e kids are gifted kids with a learning disability or one of.the many other things one could be classified with. google "2e" ir "twice exceptional" nd a ton of info. will come up.

Definitely research twice exceptional children.
Do they offer the test is other grades as well or is it just at the end of this year to get into the program? Just from personal experience, in K my daughter was reading at an M level, was doing multiplication and some division, using 4th Grade spelling words and was well above grade level. Fast forward to third grade and she began to struggle. Many children are ahead in the lower grades and it starts to level off. I wouldn't push anything until he was older but testing doesn't hurt.

I'm not sure about the testing in other grades. Need to look into that. Thanks for the feedback. Yes, this is one of my concerns too. Sure it comes easy now but work of course will get more difficult each grade. So much to consider.

There is no g&t in my district, however, my son had a 2e child who would be in first grade in his 12:1 last year (of second and third grade students)

I've never realized this! Definitely keep us updated, as my son sounds exactly like yours (he'll be 4 soon) and I'll be curious to see how it all pans out.
