Uti?

My 7.5 yo DS said his penis hurt this morning and then tonight he said it hurt a few times when he peed. I assume it's a UTI. Is there any way to treat it without antibiotics? He hasn't had it a lot in his life but there are too many articles lately about antibiotics being bad in the long run so I'd like to limit it as much as possible.

Re: Uti?

UTIs aren't common in boys like they are in girls. My son had similar symptoms and had urethritis, or inflammation if the urethra which can be caused by soaps or bacteria (among other things). I would get it checked out because if it IS an uti it does need to be treated or the infection can spread. I am not someone who advises for antibiotic for every sniffle but in this case I would. hope he feels better!

Re: Uti?

You don't mess around with a UTI because it can become a kidney infection.
You definitely need antibiotics if it is, in fact a UTI.
I would definitely take him in for a urine test.

Weird - she said it wasn't a UTI (based on the urine sample). At least he doesn't have to take meds! Just have to get him to drink lots of water - which can be rough sometimes!

Are they sending it to a lab too?
Sometimes the rapid is negative but the lab test comes back positive.

Or it could just be an irritation like a PP mentioned

Not sure if she's sending it to a lab. I would hope so but I'll ask DS if he had pain today, too. Seems like there was pain one day and less pain the next day.

Uti?

Antibiotics are fine to take as long as you take the entire dose. The problem comes when people feel better and stop taking the medication.

Exactly!
And also, they shouldn't be given for viral infections like the common cold or the flu.
But if given for an actual diagnosed bacterial infection and taken to completion, they are fine.

Re: Uti?

Was your DS recently at the beach or pool sitting in a wet bathing suit?

The same thing happened to my DS. Took him to the doctor and the urine test was negative. The doctor said basically boys don't really get urinary tract infections. He said the pain was caused by DS sitting in a wet bathing suit. We were just at the beach the day before before it happened. The water and sand in his suit caused the irritation. The doctor said change him out of a wet suit right away to avoid it happening again. It went away quickly, thankfully. Hope your DS feels better.

I'm sure that's what it was - he's in a bathing suit a lot at camp. We're good about changing him quickly when he's at the apt pool but I don't know about camp.
