Tell me all about Smithtown!
The good and the bad, anything a prospective buyer should know? How is the school district?
To those with kids in the school district, how has your experience been?
Is this a safe area? Also, how close is the LIRR? How is the commute to the city?
Are there any areas we should avoid buying in?
Feel free to FM. Thanks!

I drive through it on my way to work it's a nice area. I can't speak to the schools but if you're commuting to the city I don't know that it's the most convenient place. I've heard from coworkers who live nearby that it's 2+ hours to the city each way.

Nice area, close to lots of shopping. Commute to the city stinks. Ronkonkoma is the main line (10 min by car). Smithtown has a station, but it's very small and doesn't run as often. Depending on where in the city you could be looking at 2+ hour commute each way from out there though. LIRR I'd about 90 minutes not including daily delays. 10 minute drive to station, plus subway or walk to Penn. I don't know how people do it everyday.
My good friend is there and she says The district is good, but not much diversity, lots of drugs in HS but that is honestly EVERYWHERE on LI. She says it's a very competitive environment in HS too (pressure to have nice stuff, sports, etc.) But I feel like that's all over too.

Just to add, I live in Holbrook and it took me 10 minutes to get to the Ronkonkoma station today so I would say the drive from Smithtown to Ronkonkoma station will be more than 10 minutes for sure Unless you mean driving to Brentwood station on the Ronk line from Smithtown....

Schools are good. Public library is good. Level of diversity depends on the elementary school. It's a HUGE district.
