ikea kitchen
has anyone done an ikea kitchen with the full design and installation done by them? Is it really that much cheaper than doing a non-ikea kitchen renovation?

I've heard it's cheaper and decent quality for the price.
I actually wish I liked their stuff because I'd love to refresh my kitchen.

Re: ikea kitchen
It can be cheaper. It really depends on how much their assembly and install is.
We did an Ikea ktichen in our first house, around 10 years ago. There are things we loved and things we didn't like.
The drawers, drawer glides, hinges etc are great. We're a fan of the frameless design.
We picked a white painted MDF door, we had issues with the door fronts coming damaged, the paint being thin, and some chipping issues over the time we had it. Things I felt that if we went with a wood door we wouldn't have had. The initial issues we got the fronts replaced from IKEA
They also have limited selections of doors, and at the time only 2 colors for the boxes.
I assembled it myself and installed it with my father in law.
Assembly was a PITA but it wasn't all that hard, just have to make sure the boxes are square. It hangs on a rail system which is again pretty easy to install and a solid installation. I'd argue its only a bit harder than putting together regular ikea stuff. IMHO the hard/construction part is doing the crown molding(my FIL did that).

Re: ikea kitchen
Umm YES! We did our kitchen in ikea 11 years ago and it cost us a total of $2500. 10 uppers, 5 lowers, 1 pantry and 2 drawers. All doors and cabinets are soft close. They still look as good today as they did when we installed them (ourselves!) 11 years ago. Not a single problem or issue with them and I still love them. We did plain white shaker cabinets.

so we plan on doing everything new- new countertops, new sink, new flooring, etc. and we want to remove a wall and add an island, lol. Does ikea do stuff like that? we plan on doing this in abt a year and plan on taking out a HELOC. I want to try to keep it as close to 25k as I can though

ikea kitchen
We've done 2 Ikea kitchens. My DH and FIL installed them both. If you won't be installing them yourselves, then you may want to shop around for an installer. I think Ikea just subs it out, so you don't know what you're going to get.
The kitchens can do just about anything, but are limited in the sense that it's all standardized sizes. You can't beat the price in comparison to what you get for it. The price depends on what doors you want and what accessories you want. Both our kitchen's were small - I think the first was around $3,000 (we went with mid-range fronts and drawers in the pantry, which increased the price some, and it includes butcher block counter tops and the kitchen faucet) and the second was $2,500 (lower range fronts and minimal upgrades, a slightly larger kitchen, includes butcher block counters, the sink, and faucet). With the second, when we considered upgrading the doors, it added $500-$1000 depending on the doors. We're hoping this kitchen is short term (5-10 years), so we stayed with the lower end doors.
We looked at the stock cabinets from Lowes and Home Depot, but they cost about the same but didn't compare with the quality. I'm not sure how the higher end doors and features compare with similar products from Lowes or Home Depot. I know my BIL went to Cabinets to Go and was happy with the deal he got, so that might be something to look into.
