Cast Iron Pans
So this weekend I bought a Cast Iron Skillet (with the ridges) and a regular bigger fying pan.
It said it was pre-seasoned and seasoning it again seemed to be optional. So I didnt season.
We used both pans this weekend. And after one use; the pans seems to be rusted??? And I cleaned and dried immediately.
The brand is Martha Stewart; and the reviews seem to be pretty good.
Should I have seasoned them? Is it too late to season them now? Do I return them?
THANKS.

Cast Iron Pans
U still need to season them regardless if they’re preseasoned. Water is the worst enemy for cast iron so the rust that developed in ur pan most like happened because there might have been water on it. Once u clean ur cast iron pan (I just clean it with hot tap water and a nylon brush), u must dry it immediately. The best way u can dry it completely imo is to put it on the burner at low heat for a minute or until u don’t see any water residue anymore. Good luck with ur pans, they’re my favorite to use!
Oh and it’s not too late to save them. Get rid of the rust (u can use Brillo -depending on how much rust there is), make sure to dry them completely, and season them. Always remember that the more u use them, the better their patina gets!

Re: Cast Iron Pans
You can save the pan. Google how to clean a rusted cast iron pan.
You still need to preseason them. What’s the brand?
You will have this pan for life.

Thanks for your replies!!!

In order to Pre-season, am I using Crisco? Is that what melted shortening is??

Thank you. I have to buy a nylon brush because my two sided sponge was taking Nothing off the pan.

Re: Cast Iron Pans
Use really hot water to clean the pan, and if you have to, coarse salt to scrub. It's ok to let the pan soak a little bit. Oil the pan before you put it away. I use olive or vegetable oil.
Best thing to do is cook a batch or two of bacon, wipe out the pan with a paper towel leaving some bacon fat behind, put it in a warm 250 oven for about an hour, turn the heat off, let the pan cool in the oven, then wipe out the rest of the bacon fat.

Is it enameled? Or is it natural? So for example, I have Staub, Le Creuset, and Lodge. Lodge is my favorite. Lodge was the only one I had to season because it was not enameled.
I did like a previous poster did and put it in the oven. I used an oil with a high smoke point. When I use it and clean it, I use water and boil it on the stove. Sometimes I use baking soda or salt. I boil it, and make sure to oil it up after it’s dry. This is only for the Lodge.
