Snacks for School- for hungry kids

So my DD has been complaining since school started that she is STARVING by lunch time. She is in 3rd now and apparently they eat lunch later than she is used to in earlier grades. (And by later I mean 12:40 but I guess she is used to earlier)

She's eats a decent breakfast but isn't starving in the morning (like me) so she gets full quickly.

They have a morning snack in the classroom but even this does not seem to be enough to hold her until her lunch time.

I usually send her in with a cheesestick or pirate booty or goldfish crackers, etc because that is what she likes

What are some other options that might be more filling? They aren't really supposed to bring too many snacks because they are eating with a time limit i guess.

Any ideas?

Can you do like cheese and crackers instead of just a cheese stick? A granola bar? What is their stance on peanut butter? It sounds like if she has a little more protein she may be in good shape?

In year's past she has been allowed PB at lunch- since they have a seperate table for the kids with allergies. but no PB in the classroom.
I have to check this year to see if there are any allergies in the class and if not yes, PB is a good idea.

Granola bars she likes too- I'll buy some of those when I'm out.

thanks!

Dd likes the Cliff kids Z bar, specifically the brownie flavor. There's also a protein one that she likes from the same brand.

Re: Snacks for School- for hungry kids

My son is perpetually hungry. When he was in elementary school I would send him turkey or roast chicken and lettuce on a wrap or mini bagels with cream cheese and a side of fruit for snack. His teachers used to tell him to put his lunch away in the beginning of the year and he would have to prove that that actually WAS his snack. Chat Icon

My DD has lunch at the same time and a morning snack time. I always send in 2 snacks for her and she eats both of them. It’s usually graham crackers, cheez-its, goldfish, pretzels, granola bar, apple chips, or dry cereal. She has told me that most kids have 2 snacks but some kids have 3 snacks. We are a peanut free classroom too.

We do protein granola bars and they seem to hold them over a bit longer. I also use protein shakes (premade ones) to make smoothies that they drink with breakfast.

Grapes, apple slices, the special K pastry crisps, how about mini bagel since it will be filling, ritz crackers, kid cliff bars, hostess mini-muffins

Re: Snacks for School- for hungry kids

A cereal or protein bar could be filling. Also a banana. I wouldn't do another fruit unless it is complimentary to other snack. Mini bagels or even a half sandwich can be a good idea.

Will she eat hummus or guacamole? Could do tortilla chips or pretzels with a dip.
Turkey or ham rollups with her cheese stick
Greek yogurt with fruit and granola
Cheese and crackers
Mini bagel with cream cheese
Omelette muffins (if she's ok eating them cold)

i make muffins from the banana bread mix at TJ's and mix in about a cup of spinach to get some veggies in them. sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles, and chocolate nibs, and they love that. but if i'm out of time, i'll pick up muffins, chex cereal, and strawberries or an apple.

I love the Chocolate Mint Z Bars!! Sooo good!!! I was sending them for my DD for snack, but nixed that for this year. She managed to go 11 years without a cavity, and I think these chewy bars getting all stuck in her teeth and sitting all morning contributed to that! (or those fiber chocolate Belvita bites! ) She can eat them before school so she can brush her teeth right after though. They have a lot of protein and are pretty satisfying!

I would send her with more snack. My son has lunch about the same time and his morning snack is usually a fruit, protein muffin and then goldfish or some other type of salty crunch.

I don’t know if you like to bake but I made these the other day and they’re very filling because of the Greek yogurt. And they’re so good. https://www.skinnytaste.com/yogurt-chocolate-chip-muffins/

Re: Snacks for School- for hungry kids

So I ended up getting the Cliff Bars for kids and she loves them and I think it did the trick.
She said she is not as hungry now.
I guess she just needed more protein/calories.

Thanks all!

My DD eats so much, and I'm jealous of her metabolism Chat Icon
I pack baby carrots and hummus or ranch dip, sometimes cucumbers instead, cheese stick or baby bell, popcorn (she loves skinny pop) a yogurt squeeze and an apple, a tangerine or grapes. I'm not kidding, she eats this all. Then has lunch. Chat Icon
