Diabetic Senior Dog?
Does anybody have a diabetic senior dog? We have a pit bull mix who is about 12 years old and she's been drinking water excessively. Recently she tore the door frame off the guest bathroom to get to the toilet bowl to drink water while we were at work. I mentioned it to my FIL and he said maybe she's diabetic. It had never occurred to me but it makes so much sense. I'm planning to take her to the vet after the holidays to have her tested, but I'm just wondering if anyone had any experience? Maybe some tips about diet/exercise. She has free run of our yard in the mornings and evenings but she's an old lady so she mostly just lays around.

My dogs are not diabetic but I do dog sit a diabetic senior dog. And excessive thirst is definitely a sign. How is her vision? Vision can start to go with untreated diabetes. Definitely bring her to the vet for some blood work. If she is diabetic, they will give you special food and insulin.
If it's not diabetes, it can be something with new food or treats? can make her thirsty
ETA: Maybe bring her in before the holidays. You don't want to leave diabetes untreated if that's what it is. It should be a quick visit

I know I should bring her in sooner but I literally cannot. I'm 6 months pregnant with a 2.5 y/o and already helping out my mom as my father was just diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer so unfortunately it will have to wait.
Her vision is totally fine. We had another dog who passed away in July (ruptured tumors in his stomach) and I could tell his sight was going but this one seems okay. We've been giving her the same food as always, some recent holiday treats (pigs ears mostly- she couldn't have them when we had two dogs since they would fight over them  ) but the thirst has been going on longer than that and it didn't click until my FIL said it.

We took her in on Monday. They did bloodwork but no result yet. She's actually cut back to a normal amount on her water intake and she's eating normally, but she's looking skinny.  I don't think it's going to be good news.

Thank you. It appears to be kidney failure. So we're trying to change her diet to slow down the progress.

In addition to the diet, ask your vet about giving fluids. These are easy to administer at home once you learn. I did it with a cat I had and it extended his life by a few years.
