Driving to Disney

Leaving in a little more than a week- any advice?
Planning on leaving LI around 5:30pm / 6ish
Going to drive as far as we can and maybe stop in Georgia

Any advice, anyone have Xanax they can spare???

I went to college in Florida and we would drive so I could have my car for the year. We drove until Florence, sc the first day and the second day finished the drive. But that was without kids (although it was with my dad which may have been worse).

As a kid, we always drove down to Orlando. My parents are not early risers so we never left insanely early. When we were young, we would get to the beginning/middle of SC. As we go older, we would make it to Georgia. We were in a cramped minivan as I am one of five children.

We do a lot of road trips with our son now since we do not live close to our families. We load the iPad up with videos and go. My son has an iron bladder so he can go 5-6 hours without peeing. I have a variety of snacks in the car so we only need to stop for lunch and/or dinner.

We do it every year...we get up around 3am the first day and try to get through the major metropolitan areas before major traffic...we usually go as far as Savannah the first day, then drive a shorter day the 2nd. We always stop at restaurants for meals, even though it takes longer, because it gives us all a chance to regroup. I pack high protein, low sugar snacks, so that my kids aren't too crazy.

We’ve done it the last 4 years...starting when my kids were just 3 and 5. We try to leave as early in the morning as we can, which is never early enough to beat traffic lol, we drive all day and stop late at night in Georgia. This past summer we stopped in savannah, which is about 4 more hours to Disney, in years past we drive to Darien Georgia which is about 3 hours away...I like getting as close as possible so we get to Disney around 1 in the afternoon and go to a park from afternoon to close. The kids watch dvds or listen to music...and we traditionally stop at Cracker Barrel not because my kids like the food, but because of the gift shop. Coming home we have not stopped twice, and twice stopped somewhere in Virginia....I honestly hate it but my husband won’t get on a plane and we love Disney so it is what it is.

I have done this a few times in my life. Not always to Disney, but SC (the South of the Border signs are always a lot of fun) and Savannah, basically the I95. We have always stopped in NC, then drove on the next day to our destination. We started super early to beat the traffic.

I would suggest maybe looking into a few stops for your kids to just give them a break. I will say the drives I did as a kid were great memories.

When I was a kid we would drive from Tampa/Clearwater Area to NY at least twice a year.

My parents would drive straight through and switch off driving. We would leave at like 4am. We usually stopped for breakfast at a sit down restaurant. Other meals were eaten in the car. My mom would pack a cooler with drinks, snacks and fried chicken (lol).

Occasionally they would stop at South of the Border which is on the SC/NC border. If we did stop there, they'd relax for 2 hours and then get back on the road.

My suggestion would be to leave as early as possible or late at night. I wouldn't stop - but that's just because I am crazy and like to get where I am going as quickly as possible.

BIL and his family did this last year. They left at night, BIL slept for a good part of the day (he usually works nights and is used to it anyway) and then they left around 730pm , in the morning SIL took over.
