For those who have been, where do you recommend staying. I am going in July.
I hear amazing things about Positano but a friend actually suggested taking up homebase in Sorrento and making day trips along the coast. Any thoughts?

We stayed at Grand Hotel Aminta in sorrento - definitely recommend - reasonably priced too. This was about ten years ago. We spent most of our time in sorrento itself but did a day trip on boat to Capri. I can’t recall the proximity of other specific things to sorrento so I’m not sure if it’s the best place to base yourself if you want to visit many different areas. But we loved every minute we were there!

Re: Amalfi Coast
I have stayed in Positano, but I wish I had stayed in Sorrento. Don’t get me wrong, Positano is beautiful, but that hill is killer. Sorrento is flat. You also have a very good base to visit surrounding areas. The road from Positano was very windy and I did not like it to get to other places. I visited Pompeii and did Vesuvius from Positano and it was a really long day because of the travel.
However, most hotels know this and offer a shuttle of some sort.
I also went to Naples and Capri from Positano. But it would have been much easier to do it from Sorrento. Don’t skip out on Naples even if it is a shit hole. There is awesome food there. Just keep your watches and phones hidden.

I’ve stayed in both-Positano with just dh, Sorrento with kids. Positano was amazing but the drive to get there was awful-it was another hour at least on windy roads, and I get really carsick. Sorrento is definitely more of a big town, but it was a great base for exploring. Pompeii was an easy drive, and we took the ferry to a beach club in Positano for the day. I loved our hotel in Sorrento- the Ambasciatori. It is on a cliff with an elevator down through the rock to the “beach” below.(it was really a pier with loungers because there isnt much beach there).
