Help with trip to Amalfi Coast and Capri!
We are looking to take a babymoon to the Amalfi Coast and Capri. We were originally planning to do Ireland but after a little research it looks like Ireland is best done as a nomadic road trip around the country and that's not really what I want for this trip since I'll be 24-25 weeks pregnant
I will preface this by saying we've been to Italy somewhat recently (2009) and did the more standard Rome, Florence, Venice thing with all of the main sites and museums. We are looking to do something very different on this trip: a relaxing trip to smaller towns, great views and beautiful landscapes, and good food. Not really looking to see museums or uber-touristy attractions except for Pompeii/Herculeam which we cut from our last trip because it would have been a day trip with a 4 hour commute each way in the middle of August!
These are our initial thoughts:
- rather than do a connecting flight to Naples which involves a lot of travel, we would likely fly into Rome direct, spend the day in Rome and one night, and leave early the next morning by high-speed train to Naples (1 hour). Would you spend one day/night in Naples or head right on to Amalfi area?
- not sure where we would want to stay in the Amalfi coast area and how many nights to stay in each place. Sorrento? Positano? Amalfi?
- we are considering staying 2-3 nights on Capri
- undecided as to whether to fly back from Naples or head back to Rome and return from there.
Sadly I wont be able to drink but should be able to eat most of the delicious food.
We will likely have 11 full days, and will be going early May.
Any itinerary recs and or places to stay? Does this sound like it would be doable for what we want out of it?
FM me if you prefer. Thanks!

Re: Help with trip to Amalfi Coast and Capri!
Most people are leery of Naples; it is gritty, loud, crowded, dirty - but we loved it there. If I were you I would spend a night there. At least you will have the best pizza of your life, LOL! And, considering you would be day tripping to Pompeii, a visit to the Archeological Museum in Naples may be in order.
I would say from Naples you then start in Capri. This way you're not backtracking from the furthest point on the day you need to get your flight home.
As far as how many nights and where to stay. Sorrento, while not on the Amalfi Coast, is easily accessible and quite close to Pompeii (this is where we based ourselves). I liked Positano, but I found it to be a bit more crowded and more "touristy", while I thought the town of Amalfi, although trodden by tourist has more of a real town feel to it.
As I said, we based in Sorrento, so I don't have any recs for the other towns, but I am sure the other ladies here will chime in, too. We stayed at the Hotel Settimo Ceilo which was a very nice, family run hotel with a breathtaking view. Not sure what your budget for hotels are but I did tons of research before our trip and would be happy to let you know if you're interested.
As far as your flight home, if I were you and being pregnant, I would much rather fly direct from Naples as opposed to having to leave possibly at an ungodly hour to get back to Rome for your flight! Have fun!!!

Thank you so much! I'm having trouble finding any direct flights from Naples. It looks like my options are either a connecting flight back from Naples or getting back to Rome by train and flying direct from there.
I'm leaning against the flights to/from Naples because so far it's a long international flight to/from another European city, a 3 hour connection and then a 2-3 hour flight. A very long day of travel.
We'd rather make our way back to Naples (~1 hour by train), spend the night in Naples and then train back to Rome in the morning (~1 hour by high speed train) to fly out from Rome... or do the 2 hours by train, spend the night in Rome, and fly from Rome the next day. Of course if there is a direct option from Naples that would be best. I was under the impression that there were none but will continue looking...

You are probably right - there are no directs to Naples - its been 4 years since my last trip there! In that case, I would do Rome on the back end of your trip.
