Teacher going on maternity leave
So DS came home today and told me it was his teachers last day for the year.
We all knew she was pregnant - the school never told us officially but it was obvious and the kids found out (long story).
Would you expect the principal to email the parents and tell them it was her last day and so and so is the new teacher? This is my first time dealing with a leave replacement so I’m not sure what is the norm.

Teacher going on maternity leave
i definitely would! last year when my oldest was in first grade, he had several long-term substitute teachers (LONG story!!!) But, yup, every time there was a change, the principal would email us with an update, tell us a little bit about the new teacher, etc. She even did an evening "meet and greet" with the last one, so that we could come in and meet her and everything. So yeah at minimum i would expect an email with some details....

Re: Teacher going on maternity leave
Yes. Dd's teacher was pregnant with twins when she started in her class in sept. We were told at open school night that she'd be going on leave around Nov or Dec and at the time there were a few permanent subs working with and shadowing the class and we'd be informed who would be taking over for her once they determined that. When the time came for her to go out on leave the principal sent us home a letter with the kids saying she was officially out on leave as of today and the new teacher would be so and so.

Teacher going on maternity leave
I would give it a day. Dd's teacher went out early this year. I know she was pregnant (saw her regularly at pickup) but i'm guessing some parents probably didn't bc she went out before open school night. Teachers may not know or give a last day until the very end if that's what they choose to do. We found out her last day from the kids on her last day. The next school day we got a letter from the principal explaining who the sub would be.

I wouldnt expect the principal...I would expect the teacher to send an email, or mail home a letter. It is her class, so I think it would be her responsibility.

I kind of expected something from the teacher myself but now she’s on leave so I’m not expecting anything.
Will follow up with the principal tomorrow, I would at least like to know how to contact the sub with any questions or dismissal changes.

Yeah that is strange. You need to know who to contact about homework issues, questions, etc The communication seems lacking to be honest.

Teacher going on maternity leave
When I went on maternity leave, I emailed the parents. I teach HS though and I know my principal does not send out anything to alert parents that there is a leave replacement. They didn't even have an official replacement for me until a week after my leave started so that could be the issue as well.

They have one. She’s been lined up for a couple of weeks (I bumped into a friend yesterday - all we know is she’s knew to the district) and the kids met her yesterday...
Not many are a fan of the principal and the way leave replacements were handled in the past so I was kind of surprised and was curious what the norm is (the ones that haven’t been well received we’re not maternity leave related).

no, I wouldn't expect the teacher leaving to say anything. I would wait a few days - maybe the new teacher will send something home introducing herself

Re: Teacher going on maternity leave
When my son was in first grade his teacher went out on maternity leave. She sent a note to the parents. The new teacher also sent an introductory note as well.
I was the class mom. I knew that the replacement teacher was coming back from maternity leave. She was supposed to go back to her class and our class was supposed to get what was her long term leave replacement. I convinced the principal that we should get the permanent teacher so he did not have to interrupt 2 classes. All of the parents agreed. He took a poll. The other class was happy with the long term sub, and felt that their kids were used to her. And for our class, since we had a teacher leaving it was nice to have someone experienced who could just pick right up where the other teacher left off.
