Bellevue hospital
I have to travel in a few weeks for a week long training to bellevue hospital. I’m on the port Jeff line for the train and would be getting on in st. James. I ride the train for free. What is the best way to get myself there? Train? Driving? It seems like a hike....

Re: Bellevue hospital
You can take the train to Penn. Right outside Penn you can hop on the 34th St bus and take it across town, then walk down a few blocks.

I NEVER say this, but I’d drive. You’re in a weird no mans land for the subway. Its a straight shot on the LIE and through the tunnel.
Or take the LIRR and uber or walk the rest of the way.

This is the easiest. The M34 bus is select service and you have to dip your metrocard in the kiosk on the sidewalk then hold onto the receipt. Use any door to get on the bus. Take the bus to 1st Avenue, then walk a few blocks south to the hospital.
Subway is no where near Bellevue.

I thought about driving for a hot second. I’m not a city driver

How long do you think doing this from Penn to Bellevue will take? I have to have myself on the 21st floor by 8:30am

It’s not that bad! You’re so Far East, early in the day that it’s nothing. No different than driving on any fairly busy street on LI.
You could also do what PPs suggested and take the bus but just make sure you get off at the right stop-if you’re not familiar it can be easy to miss. Personally, unless I’m going REALLY far I feel like I can walk faster than the bus.

It should take about 30 minutes. It is a very long walk from 7th Avenue down to 1st Avenue.
log into www.mta.info on the very right hand side of the screen is a trip planner. Type in Penn Station and Bellevue and it will map out a route. Get out of Penn on the 7th Avenue side, up the escalators. The bus stop is right there in front.
If you think about driving, google map it to see how long it will take. Don't forget the return trip. The LIE out of the city is horrible from about 3:30pm onwards. One of the reasons I gave up on the express bus home to Queens.

Re: Bellevue hospital
I trained at Bellevue for a year and it is easy to get to. Take the LIRR to Penn and then hop on the bus on 34th st just outside Penn, the M34. Get off at 34th and 1st and walk. There used to be a bus, the M16, that would turn and go down 2nd which got you closer but i don't know if it still runs.

Thanks for this! Do the busses run frequently? How close is the bus stop to the hospital?

Would she have to pay for congestion pricing is that a thing yet? I know the Uber app has it factored in

Good question. I don’t think it is yet but I admit I haven’t gone through the tunnel in a couple months.

I would drive to another train station and not take the train from St James. Maybe go to Ronkonkoma. You can get direct express trains From there. At St James you will need to change

I’m not too worried about the change, I’ll be going in in the morning with my husband and he works at Jamaica station in the office building attached so I don’t have an issue with the change, I’ll look into the express though, maybe it will shave off time but the drive back to my house from ronkonkoma is over a half hour so it may not even be worth it

Re: Bellevue hospital
I agree that you need about a half hour to get from Penn to 1st Ave. I definitely do not recommend walking. It's far and you will get there tired and sweaty. It's about 1.5 miles to walk, and the bus for sure is faster than walking. The bus is super easy, even at that time in the morning. There's a bus every few minutes from Penn Station.
