Nope I wouldn't. Commute, pension, and health benefits would 100% be more important to me. I know some would disagree because you should love what you do, but I truly believe that is more important than feeling fulfilled. In case of emergency, it's wonderful to know you're only 5 mins from your kids' school and whatnot
Same. It's only been 7 months. Give it some more time. Can you get a transfer within if you're really unhappy? To me, pension, good benefits, close to home is more important than being fulfilled. If you left, would you be guaranteed fulfillment? Likely not.
Hard to transfer within, I work in psychiatry in a speciality discipline so I can’t do anything outside of that. If there is an emergency, I cant leave, I work in psych emergency medicine and we are all considered “essential” employees and if we are here we are here so that isn’t something that’s necessarily a perk. Plus I work some holidays that’s a change for me. I’m not sure what it is, I just don’t have that fulfilled feeling and it’s also emotionally draining. I see a good 15-20 patients daily, young kids I’m talking 7-12 all wanting to commit suicide, have plans, depression, anxiety, failed suicide attempts and traumatic history and it definitely chips away at me.
My husband also works for the state/ has a federal position so I’m on his health benefits and he has a pension. My biggest reason for working is god forbid something were to happen to him, I want my children to have security and a state job provides me with that but still, it’s a hard feeling to shake
compassion fatigue is real. is your real issue with what you're doing or who you're doing it for? if you work in psychiatry, i'm guessing you will be dealing with similar issues no matter the setting. are there alternatives that won't require as much of you, but are compensated fairly?

Leaving a state job?
It sounds like your job is pretty stressful - was your previous job even moreso?
I wouldn’t keep the job because you are worried that something will happen to DH in the future if it’s not the right fit.
I was eliminated after a long career with a company and after almost 12 months off I returned to a job that looked phenomenal on paper but sucks. It’s with a university so there are nice tuition benefits for the kids but I don’t think I will make it the 9 years I have to until DS1 is going to college.

My previous job was stressful in the demands of being on call and exepcted to flex my schedule to meet my jobs needs and it worked until I had kids. My new job is more emotionally stressful but in terms of “workload” sometimes I find myself looking for things to do when we don’t have a ton of patients. The emotioanl tole is more so now.
In terms of a pension, I’m 30 years with 62% my highest average 3 consecutive salaries. My health insurance is health insurance for life. My DH has the same with the lifetime health insurance and his pension is totally different. I also get tuition benefits which is good for my kids. I worry if something were to happen to DH, I know I have fairly good health benefits, a job with contractual raises, and then A pension for myself. I just feel there are so many benefits at my job that it makes leaving tough but I just don’t feel fulfilled, like I can do more with my degree.

For what I do, I absolutely make good money, I can’t deny that. I do question if it’s enough to miss some holidays. That I hate. Or to have to miss events here and there..l that’s tough. My old job, I never had that. I was off when I wanted to be

Re: Leaving a state job?
I'd stick out. Right now I hate the environment I work in. The Director is an absolute snake and C unt that has driven out so many great people from this department. The morale is non-existent and well more than half of the department is actively looking to leave.
That said, I can drop my kids off at school every morning and stroll into my midtown office at 930 every day and then leave at 4-430 and no one says boo to me. I can work from home when I need to be at my kids school functions and I rarely have a problem being allowed. Those two conveniences out weigh the fact that I have been working on a 4 person team with only 2 people for the past 8 months with no compensation or prospect of getting any compensation anytime soon

BriBri2U I feel the same way- feel stuck/stagnant in my job and we are understaffed, taking on so much work for no increase in compensation however I stay because of flexibility that I need.
