Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
I like where I am..I really do. The drive is taking a toll on me. I can barely keep my eyes open when I drive home in the PM.
If I were to look for another job and for some reason found one, can I leave my current position? Am I bound by anything?

There should be some sort of language in your contract. I think in my district they can "hold" you by quarter/semester.

Re: Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
I never signed anything other than something saying I am making a certain amount. I never got a copy of my contract.
I'm on LI.

You should definitely request a copy of your contract or borrow one from a co-worker. Ours is pretty detailed about everything and I've referred to it a few times over the years.
Otherwise, you can talk to a union rep.

Re: Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
i can't honestly imagine a district hiring you mid year knowing you're leaving another LI district. when you signed your papers there should be a paper saying you were signing on for the year and would have to take a leave or quit to get out of it. you would not have gotten a copy of it. it probably wouldn't look good for you to leave mid year because you would look unresponsible and unreliable.
try to stick the year out if you can!! it should get better once you get more used to it!

Personally, on LI, I wouldn't do it. Everyone knows EVERYONE, seriously. I would stick it out for the year and then look

Re: Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
I think I remember your concern about the distance for this new job.
Id say to try to stick it out as well.
It creates a tough situation all around when you leave mid year. You can quit, as long as you give notice. The superintendent can release you, but again, it will most likely create a tough situation.
(how about I fm you all of the Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts locations from school to home and you can load up??!)

Re: Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
haha that's what I have been doing.
The ride in the AM I am fine. On the way home I can barely keep my eyes open so I wind up stopping to get some caffeine.
I really like where I am and I don't think selling my house and buying out there is an option. The ride is just killing me and we aren't even through the first month.

Re: Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
oh boy - im sorry !!!how long is your commute? Mine is an hour on good days. i drive 70 miles a day. it really stinks.
But I see what the other girls are saying, you dont want to look bad. Try to stick it out for the year and in the meantime look around and start applying towards the end of the school year. If nothing comes up then def continue applying throughout the following year.

I feel your pain . . . mine winds up being about 50 miles one way. Luckily there is very little traffic so it takes less than 50 minutes.
I would definitely stick with the district though

Re: Leaving a job and accepting another midyear?
If you're in the city and are offered a job on Long Island, I'd say leave and don't look back!! You are not obligated to stay. No job wants you if you don't want to be there. I'm pretty positive though that if you leave a position in the city mid-year you just forfeit summer pay from them. But by then if you have a new job, who cares?! But good luck in watever you do. Trust me I understand the commute thing. I hate it too By 8pm I'm
