We are considering going to Hawaii next spring with our 8 y/o DD. Would you fly direct (10 hr flight) or break it up and stop in California for a night or two? 10 hours seems like such a long flight, especially with a child. But DH thinks it may just be better to get it over with and fly direct.

You know your child but I vote for direct. It’s an extra expense for luggage, travel to hotel and hotel. It’s also a hassle for a short period of time. Unless you have something wonderful planned in CA I would skip and make the most of Hawaii. I would just focus on Hawaii and their island. I’ve done the flight and it wasn’t bad.

Re: Hawaii
We went before having children. We picked a flight with a layover in California. We had enough time between flights to have a sit down meal. I would probably do it that way again. I don't like being cramped on the plane for 10 hours. Plus, at the time the only direct flights were from Newark. If you think you could do the long flight, it is appealing to get there quicker.

Re: Hawaii
We travel to and from Hawaii once a year. We prefer the direct flight. If for some reason, we do not fly there direct, we will do an evening flight from here to the west coast, and then look for a very early morning flight from the west coast to Hawaii (there's a 4 am flight from Vegas).
However, we usually fly first class (I have a ton of airline miles) and it's just DH and I. You'd know best how your DD would do on such a long flight.

Re: Hawaii
We didn't have that option when we flew for our honeymoon but I would have preferred a direct flight.

Re: Hawaii
We did this last summer with our kids and stopped in Arizona. It was a great place for a layover as it is sooooo much more relaxed than LAX. We got a great deal with Costco for the Grand Wailea, 4 people air, car, 9 nights, breakfast for kids $7k.

We flew to China which is a 16 hour flight with a 10 and a 9 year old. I would only fly direct because I do not want the hassle of getting off the plane, getting a hotel, getting on a plane. I'd rather just deal with it and get the whole flight over with. If you can budget for it, try to get premium economy as it makes it much nicer. Bring lots of snacks and games for the kids.

Re: Hawaii
I would not do a night in Cali. It's just an extra expense and not enough time to really do much of anything except pack up and go again.
When we flew to Hawaii we could not get non-stop flights, but we just had short layovers. Flying for 5 hours and 5 hours wasn't terrible, though I'd probably just prefer a single 10 hour flight with a child.

Re: Hawaii
We flew direct with our then 4 year old. But we have the mentality of “I just want to get there”.
