If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
What island would you move to and why? Keeping in mind, I'm looking for rest and relaxation on a daily basis.
Pros and Cons of all please!
Need help making a decision here...but having never been to Hawaii, I thought I'd call upon the experts.
Thanks ladies!

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
I recently just came back from Hawaii. It really all depends on what you are looking for. Do you need a job while you are there?
For total rest and relaxation I would definately say Kauai. We absolutely loved it there. It felt like being on the opposite side of the world. Such amazing culture, people, and atmosphere.
We liked Maui but felt it was more like Florida than anything else. The positives of it though is it has a lot more going on in terms of stores, people, jobs, etc.

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
While it would be my least favorite Island to visit, if i were going to live in Hawaii, it would have to be in Oahu.
ETA: the reason is that on any of the other islands i would feel too isolated.

MAUI!
I went to Oahu and Maui and Oahu annoyed me, too tourist attraction, very congested..not a place for rest and relaxation.
Maui is gorgeous, calm, relaxed area that can also offer some of the every day of life with it.

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
I figured Oahu was my best bet. The isolation would be great for a little while, but I'd probably get bored after a while.
I may have an opportunity for either a federal job in Hawaii or with the Honolulu Police Department. But, can't decide which to take. With the federal job, I could live on any of the islands....tough choice.
Does Oahu have areas in which the beaches and scenery are "away" from the stresses of the city? But still beautiful and relaxing?

Hmm...see, this is where my decision needs to be made. I'm fairly certain it's going to come down to Federal job=Maui, Honolulu PD=Oahu :)

That's exactly what I would say.
Although Kauai is really beautiful and peaceful, I think I might lose my mind there with such limited things to do.

Rest and relaxation - Kauai - least populated, less tourist-ridden, more nature. Downside - only one main road, so can be congested at rushhour
Second choice - Maui

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
I would move to Maui. I've been to Hawaii a few times.
Kaui - although gorgeous, would get too boring for me after too long.
Oahu - reminds me too much of Miami.
Maui - has enough of a population & city life but still rural that I would be able to balance out what I need.
Have never been to the Big Island.

My friends moved to Maui 6 years ago. I have been to visit them twice. They have become the most relaxed laid back, peaceful people-it is wonderful. It was hard at first though, they experienced alot of resentment from native islanders because they were mainlanders and it was also hard being so far from family & friends. I think living there has added years to their life. I would choose Maui-it is kind of an in between Oahu and Kauai (from what I know of them).
This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for....an area to live where I can ADD years to my life and not subtract 3-4yrs every few months! The profession I've chosen is stressful enough...need to find a happy medium somewhere I fully expect the resentment and not fitting in right away....I've moved down south twice and experienced a very similar attitude at first. Thank you for the info!

The pay is a bit more than I make here (for both job opportunities)....so, that should put me about even for cost of living expenses. We'll see...one day at a time.

Oahu, there's just so much to do there. It was my favorite island. I get very bored with nothing going on. In Maui and Kauai, after 8 pm, there is nothing!

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
My great-aunt (my grandmas sister) is from NY (like the rest of us) but when she got married-her and her husband moved to Hawaii. Their children (my moms cousins) were born and raised there ...just recently she moved to michigan, but this was after over 30 years.
She lived on Maui for most of the time and only has the most wonderful things to say about it, however it is expensive

DH & I have friends that live on Oahu. The man is from NY and the woman was born & raised in HI. They love it there. They are on the North Shore - much better than the Honolulu side. But he commutes to the Honolulu area, so you could always live on the North Shore & commute to the PD in Honolulu. It's such a beautiful island - but it's the most crowded. Start saving your money now - it's quite expensive to live there.

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....
My sister lived in Oahu and HATED IT! Called home crying everyday. The natives hate nonnatives there. People working in grocery stores wont even look you in the face or speak to you if you are non native and she would try to talk to people on the beach and same thing. She was there for about 4 years.
DH cousin lives in Honolulu right now and LOVES it. She has been there for 2 years.

oh yea in Oahu, I want to add to this that I got told off from one of the vendors because I didnt buy something from her and she took the item (that I was looking at) out of my hand, threw it and told me to GO HOME!

Hmm...most interesting. Do you know where in Oahu your sister lived? Was it far from Honolulu? I'm just curious if most of the people that live in/around Honolulu are "implants" and those on the outer edges of the island are natives for the most part....??

Maui. Prettier and less of a tourist attraction than Oahu. Although any island there would be PARADISE!!!
