How can she justify allowing your brother and BIL's kids but not yours? Since when is a "kid" over 12? After you mentioned that part, my opinion now is to decline.

I have heard of no kid request at a wedding but a sweet 16? that's a little bit extreme. And I doubt its the venue making that decision.

ETA I would decline if it were me.

Sweet 16 - does this sound right?

A sweet 16 IS a kids party. I'm sorry, but it is just out and out wrong and offensive that she would leave your kids out. I don't care if there was a blanket "no kid under 15" rule. These are the birthday girls FIRST COUSINS, your sisters NIECE/NEPHEWS. That's completely unacceptable. If she doesn't change her tune, Id absolutely decline.

Re: Sweet 16 - does this sound right?

Listen I had an adult only wedding and there were NO exceptions whatsoever and I didn't give a crap who was annoyed.
HOWEVER- this is not a wedding.

It's a sweet 16 which IS kids. I know nowadays Sweet 16's are like weddings and 16 year olds THINK they are adults but they are not.

And the fact that other kids are invited who are under 16 is a red flag. If you are saying no kids- then it should be NOBODY under 16- the age of the guest of honor and her friends.

You can't pick and choose.

I wouldn't go.

At first I thought maybe your were overreacting but then read that her other cousins under 16 are Invited. So yea, you have a right to be pissed and being that this your sister, I’d call her out on it.

7-8 yrs old can be very different than 12. But still - it’s not right to invite some and not others.

Ask her. Mention the other cousins and ask why they are invited.

I would be furious if I were you and I would tell her exactly how you feel. That's complete BS. I am feeling hurt for you.

My feelings would be so hurt at this point I think I would either not go at all or just stop by for a short amount of time and then leave. Your sister is completely insensitive and in turn she's taught her daughter to be a complete brat. You said it's Memorial Day Weekend, why not take whatever you would have given her as a gift and book a fun activity for you and your kids.

Any update from your sister about your kids going? Did you tell them you can’t go without your kids?

I agree, and I am so heartbroken for you because this is your family. I can’t even imagine how hard it can be for you on daily basis with outside judgement but family should be your rock and support. I say A Big F u to your sister and try to do something fun that weekend. The money for a dress and gift, maybe you can do a nice pool day or outing.

Your sister should not being teaching your niece to be this way. I am truly sorry. Wish I could reach through the screen and give you a hug, cause I know I would be so hurt. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I knew she was making the stuff up about the hall. Like I said before, my nieces party will be at a catering hall that has a restaurant /Lounge downstairs. The place has security and not because they are worried about the 11 and under crowd, but the teens who will try to sneak liquor etc. The teens are the liability not the kids running around on the dance floor.Chat Icon
