St Thomas

Hi all. Can you tell me about St Thomas and going with kids? My kids are 11, 5 and 8 right now. Thinking of staying at the Marriott Frenchmans Reef using the timeshare.

We've never been. We have been to Aruba and loved it.

Is St Thomas easy to drive around? safe? good restaurants?

We only stopped there on a cruise. I liked St. Maarten much better. It's very hilly there and crazy drivers! We visited the public beach and it was okay. Frenchman Reef was devastated by hurricane, we passed by and took pics a little over a year go. It's probably all fresh and new now.

Ugh - driving in St. Thomas! Not only is it very hilly, but they drive on the left side of the road, but most of the cars are American style with the steering wheel on the left, so it's very awkward and confusing.

Re: St Thomas

We went there last christmas break. We found it was very difficult to drive there. In fact, we went back to the airport to return the car. It was very hilly, narrow streets, driving on the left, it was raining the day we arrived and the car windows were all foggy, and it didn't help we were using waze and it took us no where. We decided just to take a van from the airport to the hotel. We stayed at Margaritaville. There was an area near there, Redhook, where we found good restaurants. We didn't have good weather, so we didn't make too many plans besides the pool, to be able to run inside when it started raining.

We only stopped over on a cruise, but did a bus tour and a shuttle to a snorkeling spot and I agree, we would not want to drive there!

I drove there. I also drove in Turks. I find it easier to drive on the other side of the road and it doesn't matter to me which side steering wheel was on.

It was a nice island. I think we found it a little boring but we went years ago before kids.

Re: St Thomas

I’ve only been on cruises with the most recent being May 2019. The roads are really curved and hills. We took a shuttle to the beach during our last visit and I said to DH “no way I would drive here”. Beaches are nice, food is good, and shopping is amazing. I just would not rent a car there.
