Re: Nyc doe closed through June
It’s a sad day. I’m surprised he made the decision now. I’m glad they’re planning- something we never see the city and DOE do.
My students are sick. Their families are sick. There’s death everywhere. These kids are going to need so much emotional support. My heart is breaking for them.

I think this is premature. Also scary for the kids education. I'm afraid LI is going to do the same but fingers crossed. I'm really hoping they can go back in May.

No worries, we must have posted at the exact same time!
And it’s only a matter of time for LI unfortunately. I imagine Cuomo will announce NYS school closure towards the end of April

Nyc doe closed through June
I'm a NYC teacher and I'm shocked. We always hear last about these things. I'm sad though. I really really love my class. While not commuting is great, the work is SO much more. I miss the interaction, the little faces, their pictures! Their hugs!!!
But it's the right decision. If we go back too early, we will undo everything we've been doing.

This is so sad. I realize it’s for the greater good but I still feel bad for all the students.

Cuomo says they are not closed and he has the final decision. Pissing contest, I suppose.

Yes, I was just listening to Cuomo. He basically said that it was De Blasio's opinion, no decision

Nyc doe closed through June
Haha nell u crack me up.
If they are closing everything, sure let them close schools.
If they are opening some, how the hell are you going to show up for work if you have no school or child care?
The decision is premature. They should wait until mid May to decide about June, My 2 cents

That is exactly what Cuomo said. He said that you cannot make the decision to open businesses without opening schools because there will be no childcare. He said they cannot make the decision yet because they do not know what May and June will look like.

Re: Nyc doe closed through June
What I don’t understand is why do they need the 180 day waiver? Aren’t these remote days considered school days and now that they took the break away they would even go over 180 days

I'm glad Cuomo is standing firm. Ironic that DeBlasio was the last to close the schools and now he is the first to call it. I think it would be very premature especially since it is starting to plateau. We cannot be staying at home, closing the economy and schools for months on end. At some point the risks will outweigh the benefits.

DeBlasio has always been the biggest asshole in the history of NYC so nothing he does surprises me.

DeBlasio is the most bipartisan political around. He is universally hated. Democrats, republicans, no one can stand him.

And yet, he got re-elected. The apathy in NYC was so bad, barely anyone voted in that election. Scary

Re: Nyc doe closed through June
I couldn't believe it when the mayor announced and Cuomo didnt; I knew it was going to cause a shittt storm and was wondering if Cuomo was ok with this. Turns out he wasn't!!
Even if they had talked and were agreement, IMO deblasio should have never announced before Cuomo did cause all it was gong to cause was questions and confusion for everyone outside NYC which of course it did. He was moron for opening his mouth before the governor because it should be announced all at once!

The remote days do not count. The 180 day rule is about school being "in session" which are days on which attendance is taken, days on which Regents examinations, State Assessments or local examinations are given and days on which superintendent's conference days are held.

DeBlasio literally texted Cuomo moments before going on tv to make the announcement. There was zero discussion between them about it.

Seriously??? Where did you hear that? That is nuts.
You would think there would be a big discussion before any announcements were made. I couldn't believe that happened. Now what? If Cuomo says that the schools will open, it's going to look as though he is less caring of the safety of the students and their families as that was a main idea of the speech given by DiBlasio.
I am not a Cuomo fan at all under normal circumstances but I think what he is saying is making complete sense and he is showing great leadership in that regard. Now...if we could just get him to pave the roads while everyone is home that would be great!

They are taking attendance at my kids school - they didn't start until 4/6.

oh ok so basically deblasio let all the teachers know (cause from what I hear teachers were notified 8:30 that morning before he announced) and then shot a text to Cuomo right before going on TV the balls!! I would be so pissed at DeBlasio if I was Cuomo!! To bad he cant take action against him for doing that!
