Do my kids teachers hate their jobs so much (nyc schools)?? If so, i feel bad for them and my kids.

I chose a job i love and 99% of time want to go to work. I am not interested in a snow day after being off for 10 days.

I understand safety issues like driving in from out east but cheering like the kids themselves all over FB isnt what I want to see as a parent.

I am a teacher...I love my job. I enjoy going to work most days. However, I love my kids more. I enjoy being home with them. And I get excited just like my kids when we have a snow day. We get to have an extra fun day. I don't understand what is wrong with that?!?!

Ditto, im a teacher also. I feel exsctly the same as you. Were excited to spend another day home with our kids. Doesnt mean im a horrible teacher that hates my job. It means im glad i dont have to worry about my kids freezing at the bus stop. Or getting in a car accident.

Re: NYC DOE closed!

Ok, no offense but let's get serious. It's 100% about our safety and the safety of our students

I work in a school just right on the Nassau queens border and too many times I've driven home and almost gotten slammed in to, skidded across an intersection, and it's taken me well over four hours to get home. I can't imagine what someone else with a longer commute would go through. Not sure about you, but I don't want to die trying to be a superhero going to work on a day when weather men and county officials tell people to stay off the roads.

Furthermore, Some of my students get bussed from other districts in the ass end of queens to attend our school. It's not only dangerous for them to be out on the roads, walking to the bus when half of them are already physically unstable and medically fragile, but it takes them even longer to get back and forth

When my kids schools are closed here , it obviously means the conditions are not ok for the school buses to be driving. If a bus can't get through my neighborhood streets what makes it ok for me to drive those same roads to go all the way to work and then face worsening conditions to come back?

It's common sense to close the city schools. I shouldn't get penalized and get one of my personal days taken away when circumstances beyond my control dictate that I shouldn't be driving.

Also yeah if my kids are home because their schools are closed and I too get the day off, that's about eleventy billion worries lifted off my shoulders. And yes I get to play with them. And make the really annoying thousand piece lego set. And dirty every pan and dish baking brownies and making hot chocolate. And having them "help" me shovel which makes twice the amount of work for me. I'd still rather be home with them esp when they have off, than go to work. If that makes me unprofessional, well ok

And for what it's worth I don't have any social media but if I did I wouldn't be one of those morons that go berserk but it's prob a combination of relief from not having to worry about the drive and their own kids and happiness that they get to spend that time with them.

I get all the points you are making and would feel the same. Publicly cheering about isnt professional though. Especially in jobs like healthcare and education IMO. I would never do that particularly on social media.

I love my DD more than anything but after over a week with her home the LAST thing I want is to be stuck in the house with her another day only 2 days after going back.
Does that make me a bad parent??
Or a good teacher?

Nyc teacher here and happy that I don't have to drive over 30 miles each way in a blizzard. I love my job. But I love being home with my family more. Doesn't make me a bad teacher. Makes me human.

That makes you a mother of a little one. Now that DS is older, it is so easy. We will sleep in, which we both love, DH will work from home, DS is already planning on doing something with his friends. He is happy, I'm happy... Also I don't have to think about what to pack for lunch, the morning rush to get ready, etc.

And to answer a PP about being happy publicly, I don't find anything wrong with that. On my FB numerous people (including one that works in our school) are very happy about it.

I've worked in healthcare my entire adult life. I no longer work for a hospital and tomorrow is my first snow day ever. I have trekked through the subway, over the 59th street bridge and skidded along the LIE in blizzards to get to work. If there is one group of people whose safety is completely disregarded, it's healthcare workers.

I'm glad teachers have off. I bet most parents do, too. But I can assure you, there are tons of doctors, nurses, techs, therapists, etc who are scrambling to find childcare and nervous about driving in a blizzard. They don't get the day off.

Yes!!! Same for first responders. Police, fire, EMS.
DH used to dread snow. His commute to Brooklyn would be a 3 hour or more nightmare. Horrendous.
I am extremely fortunate to be able to work from home. But I never ever wish for snow. It's not all fun and games for a lot of people with jobs that we all depend on who can't stay home with movies and hot chocolate

That is part of what i am saying. All these workers including teachers are in service oriented jobs where you serve "customers". The flaunting of something like a snow day doesn't look good and its unprofessional.

Could you imagine your loved one being in the hospital and a nurse was bragging about drinking wine, sleeping in and jumping up and down cause of a snow day!? People who do this are adding to the bad reputation of teachers. And again as a parent who send her kids to public schools i find it concerning just as I would as a taxpayer if a police officer was acting unprofessionally.

I don't teach at the moment but I have never been fb friends with students or my students' parents. I keep my fb very private so I wouldn't give a single thought to coming off unprofessional bc of celebrating a day off. I live in Suffolk and worked in Nassau. There were plenty of days where Suffolk was under a state of emergency but I had to trek to work. My 45-60 minute commute often took 2-3 hours with snow. You better believe I celebrated the snow day call, especially when it came the night before. Otherwise, you're stuck wondering what insane hour you should plan to leave in the morning to try to get to work on time (I left at 6am on a normal day).

And the healthcare worker/first responder parents appreciated it more than you will ever know. Because they get it. And because if they had to stay home, someone wouldn't be getting their medication on time. Someone would wait an extra day to find out if they had cancer. Someone would die of a heart attack because the ambulance didn't get there in time. Someone's dog would die in a fire because the firefighters didn't get there fast enough.

So, thank you for leaving at insane time in the morning and for braving the roads. Trust me, you have more people than you realize in solidarity with you.

No I was secretly hoping it wasn’t going to snow bad and my son would be in school while I worked from home I’m peace. Now I will probably have DH and DS bothering me while I’m trying to work. Lol

I have a snow day because we follow the NYC school schedule and the kids just have a delay right now so I’m celebrating!!! I think it’s worth celebrating because it doesn’t happen often in NYC.

DH is a first responder and is off tomorrow but usually isn’t. He usually goes in before the storm since he has to be there. Teachers can’t really do that... my friend who is a nurse generally goes in early too. Not saying it doesn’t suck but there are some work arounds in other professions that done get snow days.

Re: NYC DOE closed!

DOE teacher here and single mom of 3 kids. You bet your behind I’m thrilled with a snow day. I travel 35 miles each day to get to my job that I LOOOOVVEEEE.
Know what I love more? My kids.

The thought of having to travel when every news outlet is saying to “stay off the roads” and when my kids are off makes me twitch. I need to find child care, then I need to leave my home at 5:00am to be to my school at 8:00 and Hope I’m on time while driving through blizzard conditions white knuckling it over the bridge. My safety and my family are my concerns.

Furthermore, I will be happy on social media. Nothing wrong with being happy about a day off at home with my children who i don’t get to spend NEARLY enough time with during the week because i commute for approximately 4-5 hours each day. Yes we just had a break for Christmas, but with the chaos of the holidays and sharing custody, it felt rushed. I plan to enjoy a day making cookies and watching movie with my favorite people.

I am dedicated to my students and my families in ways you will never know. I take work home every night and every weekend. I take my students problems home with me. I cry over their problems and heartbreaking situations. I pour my heart and soul into my students and love each and every single one of them and I am
Proud of their accomplishments.

Im also dedicated to staying safe and healthy and present for my own children... If that makes me a bad teacher... then so be it.

Adding to the bad reputation of teachers???

That is so offensive to people who bust their butts everyday for your kids.

To begrudge them a little online revelry because they don't have to trek out in the middle of a snowstorm at an ungodly hour and risk their lives on the road is mean spirited and, worse, utilizes faulty logic. Loving one's job doesn't preclude one from not wanting to die on the way.
