Meeting the kids
So i recently started dating this amazing guy. He has 2 older kids. a 15 year old boy and 16 year old girl
In 2 weeks i am going to meet his kids. I am incredibly nervous, teens and opinions :)
I have a pool, so we thought it would be best to spend the afternoon at the pool, less stress, less direct contact.
I need some ideas for myself Break the ice, conv? etc

Meeting the kids
Tough ages. Having a 20 year old girl and a 17 year old boy, my advice would be don't try too hard, and don't ask too many personal questions. Find out what they are into ahead of time and see if you can do a little research in advance. Does he play video games? What platform, pc or console? Does she like Tiktok? Do they play sports? Stick to basics.
And don't be surprised if they don't want to swim and just sit there on their phones. it's not you.

Re: Meeting the kids
I have a 17 yo DS and a 14 yo DD. Find out what shows and/or video games they like and do some quick research on them. You'll never know everything, but just some top-level info goes a long way. If you know that Jotaro has a Stand called Star Platinum in JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, or that there is a Bedrock and Java edition of Minecraft, I think it will show them that you at least know of things they like.
If none of the names I said make any sense, they will when you hang around teenagers long enough....

Also, maybe pick up a card game or something geared toward teens (Exploding kittens or camera roll or something) that you might all play if they get bored.

I agree board games, snacks that kids like, be kind and yourself. If they don't want to open up at first, be okay with that.

Re: Meeting the kids
Yes don’t get insulted when they are on their phones the entire time. I honestly have no clue about video games and I live with one who can be on almost 24/7 lol. Honestly they might not want to talk to adults about that but you just don’t know with kids. Some fun games might be good. Can you ask their dad what they are into? That will help break the ice is it is something they enjoy.

Re: Meeting the kids
Very exciting! I have a 14 y/o DS. As others said, ask about their hobbies to make small talk, video games, sports, pets. It'll be small talk because most of their times they will be on their phones. We have a cat and DS loves to watch funny videos of cats. Board games sound fun, and in our case they need to be fast, so no monopoly, but something like UNO or sorry.

Re: Meeting the kids
I have an idea for you. Could you play board games on line first? Board game arena.com will let you play on line a bunch of games and maybe serve to break the ice.

Re: Meeting the kids
I am excited for you and this new chapter in your life. First thing with teens is you never know what you are going to get. Really quiet or an open chatter box. Don’t try too hard, if they are quiet don’t take it personal. It sucks that you can’t really ask about school as an ice breaker.
Get to know their interests, video games, shopping, favorite shows, type of food they like. The pool is definitely a good environment. I’m an adult and would be excited to go to someone’s pool right now. You would be my new best friend from the start.
Have snacks!
Games: badminton, ball for the pool, corn hole?
Good luck, breathe and take it easy.

Re: Meeting the kids
I’m very happy for you!
When I was meeting my ex’s teenaged children, the best advice I got was to be a “like a cat, not a dog.” Lol. Be warm and inviting but let them come to you essentially. A relationship will evolve organically over time. Pool is a great idea for a first visit. Have fun!

Re: Meeting the kids
And remember that every kid is different. Even siblings. What works perfectly for one of the kids may blow up in your face with another, so definitely plan on being flexible. My two DC are very different. DD would stay on her phone the entire time, but DS would love to talk with you about his favorite show for as long as you'll sit still...
