Just learned my kids’ school, due to its size, will have children in school one. day. a. week. The school has a large enrollment and apparently a very teeny tiny building (who knew). They are in 3rd grade. And one is in the ICT. ( I have another son is self contained - we will see what happens there).
Now, with wealthy smaller districts like Syosset going back 5 days a week, tell me how this isn’t going to create (or exacerbate) a huge achievement gap?
I think it’s time to be open and those in favor of such restrictive school opening plans need to admit that it WILL create a huge achievement gap, and it IS punitive to vulnerable communities. This is staggering inequity.
This is if NYC schools are allowed to open at all. We are at the mercy of the teachers union.

I totally agree on the educational achievement gap. My boys are still pre-k age but my niece is starting kindergarten in pat/med district. She’s only going 2 days a week, my district is 5 full days for the entire district pre-k-12 whereas hers is not; i am so sad for my niece and worried that she won’t get the most out of schooling. The divide across the island and NYC is going to be large when it comes to educational achievement. It’s very sad for these kids.
I’m not sure about other agencies but my sons SEIT can only provide service in schools, she can’t come to the home so he will be having some zoom SEIT sessions, luckily the gym he gets OT/PT at will be on site. I wonder what’s going to happen for all these kids getting home services and the regression that will occur

It’s sickening. I have been calling Catholic schools all week but they won’t take my son who is in an ICT. I already pay through the nose for a supplemental tutor after last spring’s disaster. Looks like I’ll have to quit my job too and become a special Ed teacher.
For this and many reasons, New York City is over. Whoever is there, get out while you can. I would if I could.

So the city's neediest children have to be deprived of their right to an education until teachers decide its safe enough? Many want no new cases of Covid at all for something ridiculous like 30 days. So I guess that means NYC public school students will never again go to school...

30 DAYS?? Well that's never happening so then what? This is really getting ridiculous. Teachers that feel uncomfortable should take a leave of absence and not projecting their fears on students with their 14 layers of hazmat protection. There are a ton of teachers in NY that are certified but working at Starbucks because there weren't enough permanent non-sub positions to go around. Now there are. Call them in. And it's unconscionable that some districts can do 5 days and others only 1 or 2 days. And special needs kids NEED their services. It's non-negotiable. Absolutely disgusting. We pay some of the highest school taxes in the country. They need to figure it out and do better because this is unacceptable. These people are paid more than enough to be in the position to figure this out. Put those hundreds of thousands they make to use. It's unacceptable that schools think it's unsafe for a 10 yr old to go to school more than 2 days a week, but perfectly safe to be in DAYCARE the rest of the week. School taxes need to start being withheld then until we have 30 days of no new cases. Parents need to rise up. These people work for us and they're failing our kids!!!

It's insane. I have teachers on fb posting nothing but how unsafe it is for them to go back to school while also posting photos of the bday parties they're hosting IN RESTAURANTS and BBQs they're attending. It's safe to invite 30 people to a restaurant for your bday, but not safe to go back to school? How does that work?
I'm livid. 30 days. Why are teacher unions making these ridiculous unreasonable demands like 30 days zero cases and teachers shouldn't do live lessons? MAYBE if some of these districts had done a semi decent job with remote learning last semester instead of sending links to worksheets parents wouldn't be so against remote learning! Inner city kids are going to be the ones to suffer the most.

I really think the state dropped the ball on this whole thing. They should have been implementing some sort of baseline for all districts to provide to their students across the state. This year is definitely going to be split for the haves and have nots. At the very least they should have implemented a state wide remote plan for those who can not go back full time. Our district is going back full time K-12 and already said they have so much money in reserves then can hire as many teachers they need to split classes with no issues. While I am thrilled for my kids, I really do not feel this is right and something should have been done at the top for those districts more well off help out those districts that aren't. We are in a crisis and they should treat this years education as such.
