NC infection rate is way too high. They never should have opened up schools to begin with. If NY was anywhere near their number, all schools would have been remote.
Yeah, I'm not sure why all the colleges around here decided to open (other than money). All the K-12 schools are virtual at least for 9 weeks.
But, based on Cuomo's guidelines, K-12 schools wouldn't be allowed to open (but, most people I know in NC K-12 schools are remote anyway).
Cuomo is opening schools at 5% and closing them at 9%. So NC would open under his guidelines.

The percentage of positive tests for the state is 6%, they say it should be below 5, but that doesn't seem horribly high, what am I missing?
This issue comes down to the fact that the college students were not practicing any of the CDC guidelines to limit transmission. They were hosting large parties with no social distancing or masks. This just shows how a low infection rate (2% initially) can explode in one week. These students probably were out and about in the town as well and probably infected others along the way. Meanwhile the University probably had an extensive plan to minimize exposure, but it didn't matter.
I definitely think it is the college kids who did not follow simple rules that is causing the problem.
I was just questioning the different comments that NC was in horrible shape (outside the college) and that the rates are way too high. If 6% is way too high to open anything, we are going to be locked in our houses forever.
Even here in NY the college kids were not following the rules. I was at the beach back in June and there was a group of about 20-25 of them all coming at different times and joining this huge group. Hugging, kissing, sitting on top of each other- SHARING beers. Yep, sharing beers. Like, hey taste this beer, it's awesome! I just don't think they will ever follow the rules at that age. They think they are invincible, they want to do what they want to do, they want to party. I don't see that changing, sadly.
Yup. Everyone is so concerned about elementary kids following the guidelines, but I have more faith in my class of 1st graders than older students.

Same. My HS students are always sharing drinks, food, air pods, phones, etc. Last year 4 students in one class came down with mono even though every single day I would tell them not to share drinks. I would also encourage them to wash their hands before leaving my class for lunch as I have 7 sinks with soap, but very few of them ever took my advice.

Not surprised, especially since North Carolina already has a huge problem outside of colleges.
They peaked in July and have been trending down since then. What did you mean by huge problem?
Huge enough that they are on the quarantine list for NY.

Thats'[ exactlyit. I don't think it matters what state this happened in & I don't think it manes all schools are going to go remote as soon as they open, but I wouldn'tbe surprised if other colleges do.
It is more likely the dorm living than the actual classes that cause this.

A big culprit is Greek life parties on a lot of campuses. I saw one school has an entire sorority house in quarantine.

NC’s infection rate has been above 5% for weeks so you’re correct that under Cuomo’s guidelines they would NOT have opened.

That’s also UNC.

Yeah in Oklahoma. There was also a huge off campus party at Notre Dame.
