UNC already going to all online after only a week
It started with a video of sorority girls coming out of a building and no one wearing masks. On Friday there were 2 clusters of students in dorms that were positive, and now there are 177 students in isolation and they cancelled all in person classes - just 1 week after classes started.

I saw that earlier. Positivity rate went from 2 to 13% in a week.

Not surprised, especially since North Carolina already has a huge problem outside of colleges.

They peaked in July and have been trending down since then. What did you mean by huge problem?

Probably their infection rate right now as compared to NY.

Sure, well we peaked in March so everyone will be worse than us. When I look at the charts and see a decline, that is good to me. Their icu beds are less than half full for the state and hospitalization trends are down also.

Do they have mask/quarantine mandates like NY?

It's 12.1 per 100k. And the highest was 19.2 - I wouldn't say it's a "huge" problem but, it is higher than here.
ETA - Not surprised about the outbreak at the college now.

Just the University:
This decision comes after the University's COVID-19 positivity rate rose from 2.8 percent to 13.6 percent last week. As of Monday, the University has 177 students in isolation and 349 students in quarantine both on and off campus.

Re: UNC already going to all online after only a week
Until we see a gamechanging event, which can't come soon enough, we will see more of this.
And we will see how led astray so many have been led by the magical thinking, rationalizations, and selfishness of others.
Praying that some combination of a vaccine, treatment, containment strategy, or common sense prevents more needless death and suffering.

Not sure if it's state mandated or if it's by city, but I know that all the surrounding cities (Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, etc) have a mask mandate. But clearly the students are doing whatever they want (the sorority video from 2 weeks ago) and I see about 10% of the people in public not wearing masks.

NC infection rate is way too high. They never should have opened up schools to begin with. If NY was anywhere near their number, all schools would have been remote.

Yeah, I'm not sure why all the colleges around here decided to open (other than money). All the K-12 schools are virtual at least for 9 weeks.

The percentage of positive tests for the state is 6%, they say it should be below 5, but that doesn't seem horribly high, what am I missing?

I don't think it's way too high and like you, I have been looking at out of state rates and many are on a downward trend which is positive.
But, based on Cuomo's guidelines, K-12 schools wouldn't be allowed to open (but, most people I know in NC K-12 schools are remote anyway).
I would think a college would be able to control if everyone stayed on campus - and distsanced/wore masks so it would be different to open (but, obviously they didn't).

This issue comes down to the fact that the college students were not practicing any of the CDC guidelines to limit transmission. They were hosting large parties with no social distancing or masks. This just shows how a low infection rate (2% initially) can explode in one week. These students probably were out and about in the town as well and probably infected others along the way. Meanwhile the University probably had an extensive plan to minimize exposure, but it didn't matter.

I definitely think it is the college kids who did not follow simple rules that is causing the problem.
I was just questioning the different comments that NC was in horrible shape (outside the college) and that the rates are way too high. If 6% is way too high to open anything, we are going to be locked in our houses forever.

I think even with social distancing its bound to spread if all the kids attend and dorm there. Dorms are like a petri dish, my daughter was sick with something almost every week when she lived at college, it was endless. Once off campus, not sick at all.

Even here in NY the college kids were not following the rules. I was at the beach back in June and there was a group of about 20-25 of them all coming at different times and joining this huge group. Hugging, kissing, sitting on top of each other- SHARING beers. Yep, sharing beers. Like, hey taste this beer, it's awesome! I just don't think they will ever follow the rules at that age. They think they are invincible, they want to do what they want to do, they want to party. I don't see that changing, sadly.
