Re: Anyone here A Veteran? Married to One?

No, but my Dad and Uncle are/were. I think Veterans Day is a strange holiday, tbh. It’s kind of the reason for WW2. In other countries it is known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. There is no need for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Just make it one day and honor those that died and those that served.

Here it is St. Martin’s Day. It is the beginning of Karneval. It’s time to eat all you want now.

How is Veteran's Day the reason for WW2? Never heard that one before....

Well to people like my husband who spent close to 4 years in a literal combat zone, countless hours in therapy to address resulting PTSD, attending funerals of former comrades who killed themselves because they couldn’t deal the pain-this holiday matters a whole lot.

It marks the signing of the agreement that ended WW1 which led to the Versailles Treaty, the major reason for the start of WW2.

Well, I’m sorry that happened. Many other countries use Veterans Day as a Memorial Day. And that’s it.

Re: Anyone here A Veteran? Married to One?

Are you trying to say Veterans Day caused WW2?

What a place of privilege to feel it’s weird to honor those who served and sacrificed their freedom to protect yours. Sorry it feels weird for you. I guess since my dad didn’t die in the jungle but instead suffers life long injuries, there should be no public reflection on his service.

Just realized, you aren’t even in the US. Why do you give a single F what holidays we have?

I think you should reflect on how you could be a better human. Start with your words.

Whatever. I’m American and can express what I like about the public holidays. And let’s face it, the public holidays aren’t even really holidays. Stores are open and many people have to work. I’m also noticing things that are quite strange about the US, and this holiday is one that I find strange now.

I am a good human being, not sure where you got that from? And my words? How about you start with your literacy? Read what I wrote above. It is indirectly related to the start of WW2. It was originally called Armistice Day to mark the end of WW1 causing a treaty with harsh penalties creating more political unrest in the world leading to WW2. I never said that a holiday caused WW2. I’m talking about the history of it. Again read.

I’m not heaping on PP, who has always seemed to be a very nice person, but I think it’s interesting that you live in Germany and apparently they have that view of Veterans Day and World War II. It sounds like a German apologist argument quite frankly. A way to say the US caused WWII instead of Germany. This is in the spirit of debate, not attack.

We as Americans know the history of Veteran's Day. But you tell that t all the men and women who have served and currently serving. WOW, you have some nerve saying that. My dad was in the Navy, I have a grandfather and great uncle who served in WW2, was a POW and captured twice and escaped the Germans twice. He was a paratrooper, and jumped out of an airplane on D-Day. My great uncle went on and fought in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded 2 purple hearts and a bronze star. Try telling that Veteran's Day is a waste to them. BTW, all my relatives who were in the military, wanted to be there.I am so proud of all the stories he told us. He never talked much about Vietnam. I just cant believe you are even saying this. Heck everyday should be Veterans Day. I am so proud of all their sacrifices they make everyday for our country. I am done...have nice night!

Here you say that "It's kind of the reason"

Certainly you can understand why someone reading your posts might be confused.

Re: Anyone here A Veteran? Married to One?

I said “kind of” and “indirectly.”

Someone told me I said it WAS the reason.

FTR: I do think they should be honored— with better healthcare and support, but they aren’t getting what they need. By the time January 20th rolls around, I’m sure there will be plenty of negative comments about healthcare.

Because I find it culturally different and a quirk about US culture that I recently noticed does not mean I do not honor them and it doesn’t make me anti-American. Nowhere in this thread have I said I do not honor them.

I guess you could say it is somewhat of an apologist argument here. But I don’t think it is meant that way. They just have a very different idea of war. And I wouldn’t say the US caused it as the treaty was made by other countries as well. But historians have analyzed what led to WW2 and this tends to get mentioned. I think it is more of how did a madman get in control like this? The population was deeply in debt because of the treaty and they elected a person who stated it wouldn’t be like that anymore and let’s blame a group of people, etc. All messed up ideas, of course, and they do acknowledge this with the leaving up of war torn buildings, concentration camps as museums, documentation centers with thorough explanations and those kinds of things.

I appreciate the debate and the fact that it wasn’t an attack.

Oh and I forgot SO was in the army here. It was part of the mandatory service that used to be in place. No fighting in wars, though.

Re: Anyone here A Veteran? Married to One?

I think I said it on another thread, but I'm grateful to all veterans for their service.

As a former SS teacher I would never make that type of connection - at least not causation - between Armistice Day and the cause of WW2.

The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles were due to a variety of reasons but not particularly because of us. It was mostly the European allies, particularly France, which was pissed because of the loss of the Alsace Lorraine. WW1 was also far deadlier than any war before it because of new technology and Europe was justifiable scared AF of something like that happening again. Remember also that Germany's allies had mostly fallen apart - i.e. the Ottoman Empire - so there was really no one else left to beat up on other than Germany.

Woodrow Wilson's 14 points were much more aligned with peace making but we were outnumbered and there were other practical issues with those.

The US really just wanted to be left alone after that, and it didn't have to go the way it did. But anyway I would draw the connection between the TOV and WW2, certainly, but not Armistice Day and WW2.
