veteran moms - what do i really need in my hospital bag?

I had a bag of toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup, deodorant, face wipes, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, soap, hair ties), flip flops, comfy clothes, a brush, an extension cord, phone charger, pads (I didn't like the hospital ones), granny panties, comfy bras, and snacks (I got induced and waited ALL DAY to eat- those snacks were so necessary)!

I'm definitely a light packer. I didn't need much, and DH could always bring me something if I forgot. I forgot my brush with DS1, and my extension cord with DS2.

Camera, phone/tablet, chargers, clothes and bathroom stuff for you. I used te hospital pads and mesh undies while there but my own at home.

Then take home outfit for baby. They give you everything and more for the baby.

We def overpacked. But for dd2 we knew better. I believe I brought my own pillow.

Re: veteran moms - what do i really need in my hospital bag?

I'll tell you what I forgot - my hairbrush! And after laying on your back for umpteen hours in a hospital bed, you NEED a hairbrush!

I also ended up needing pj's, but I ended up with an emergency c-section so I was in the hospital for 5 days. Not sure the level of need for a 2-day stay...

Basic toiletries
camera and charger
flip flops and or slippers, something easy to get on and off
granny undies, maternity yoga pants or sweats, nursing tanks, hoodies
big reuseable water bottle
take home outfit for baby
didn't bother with a boppy or pillow and they have me a huge stack of towels that was replenished daily

I'm sure some things depend on which hospital. Sony brook doesn't give mesh undies for example. Bathrooms are private and clean so I didn't bother with shower shoes.

Basic toiletries (face wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturizer, etc.) DON'T pack razor/shaving cream -- you are NOT going to want to bend in the shower or do very much of anything for that matter! Camera, cell phone charger (one for you and one for DH/significant other), slippers with good grippy bottoms so you don't slip (some people do flip flops for the shower -- I packed them but never used them because LIJ has private baths, so I wouldn't pack them in the future). I packed granny panties and never used them -- I lived in the mesh undies the hospital gave and found them really comfortable. Comfy clothes in dark colors (tank tops, sports bra, yoga pants). Bring extras -- you'll undoubtedly get blood on things. DEFINITELY bring a reusable plastic water bottle. I bought a Contigo brand with a pop up straw. It was amazing. The hospital only gives you that little water pitcher and the small 8oz cups. I was sooooo thirsty and walking to the ice machine at the end of the hall was my exercise. Never used my Boppy pillow. Extra empty duffle bags to take home all the free stuff the hospital gives. Take home outfit for baby -- I bought a newborn size one and a 3 month one because I wasn't sure how big DD would be. Chapstick. I think that's pretty much it. I didn't do a separate bag for labor/delivery and post-birth. Just put everything in one.

Re: veteran moms - what do i really need in my hospital bag?

I am pretty low maintenance and don't need much. This is what I used/needed:

Camera!
Phone charger
Black pants, leggings, yoga, etc (ds1 was a section and ds2 vaginal - I wore pants as soon as I could - black because you will bleed on them)
Nursing tank
Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, mascara)
Underwear and pads (Katz gives you the mesh ones and I wore them with their pads)
Baby Outfit

Re: veteran moms - what do i really need in my hospital bag?

I'm a real minimalist:
Hair stuff (hair band, brush, dryer)
Cell phone & charger
Camera
Baby outfit
Outfit for yourself to go home in (I'm totally happy in hospital gowns & don't want to do laundry).
You also need a car seat for baby to be ready

Re: veteran moms - what do i really need in my hospital bag?

I'm pretty minimal myself
I packed:

Maternity sweats in dark colors
2 over sized tee shirts
Tight sports bra (I knew I wasn't BFing)
Granny panties
Flip flops

Toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash
Shampoo/conditioner/comb
Deodorant
Hair ties and hair clip

I did have DH bring make up case the next day- I felt good and once i got the IV out and showered, I wanted to put some make up on for guests- nothing fancy- just BB cream, blush, etc.

Going home outfit for baby (I wore my sweats and t shirt home, i didn't bring a going home outfit for me)

Gum
Phone charger

What I really loved having was these:

External Image

Kept them on the nightstand for a quick freshen up whenever my mouth felt yucky- used them in L&D too because my mouth was dry

Re: veteran moms - what do i really need in my hospital bag?

camera
phone
1 outfit for the baby
1 outfit for me to come home in
a toothbrush
toothpaste
a hair brush
a towel for taking a shower
flip flops

i really think that was all i used out of my bag, the hospital took such good care of me.

the hospital gave me underwear and pads and everything to care for the baby and a pen and paper and food (plus visitors brought food), etc.
