Work question

Does anyone else feel like their job makes them physically ill?

I'm sure dealing with absurd school schedules and the occasional quarantine of my 5 year old doesn't help but I flip between hyperventilating and feeling like I'm going to vomit on a daily basis.

Anyone else?

Not exactly, but I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. I used to have a supervisor that brought me to the stage of vomiting. I thought I would have to leave a great job because of one toxic person. Fortunately for me he moved on. I couldn’t imagine juggling everything with a school-aged child at home.

Yes. I throw up almost daily because the anxiety and my job keeps me up at night. I've considered quitting many times, but it's just not reasonable to do so...

Re: Work question

I had a boss that physically made me ill. I broke out in hives because of a terrible boss.

Work question

In the past yes mainly due to a horrible boss. I would get anxiety attacks every day and the thought of going to work was so depressing. He was let go after and replaced with an amazing boss and that was a night and day difference for me.

A few months ago I took on a new role at work and it was VERY stressful. I was having nightmares and anxiety every day dreading all that I had to be done. Thankfully the worst part is over (knock on wood) and it's much better now but it's so horrible to feel so much anxiety about a job. For me quitting was not an option which makes it more stressful.

I think its super hard now too especially for those of us telecommuting...there is literally no separation of work/home life and everything seems to blend into each other.

Sorry you're going through this.

Yes. I have posted on this board many times how my job takes no Covid precautions and half the office has had it. Luckily they fired me this week. I feel like I was released from an unjust prison sentence!

SUCH a sad state of affairs when you are relieved to be fired. So sorry you were treated this way. Biden was said to be working on unemployment coverage for people who leave jobs due to unsafe COVID working conditions. Hope this is a springboard to finding a much better environment, you deserve it.

I have been talking to DH about this just this week. Workload has just become unrealistic and honestly I can't see sticking this out much longer. I know others on my team feel the same way.

Work question

Yes. I was feeling this way for months. I've been working from home since early March 2020. My daughter has been remote learning since then as well. I managed a large team of sales people who just had no respect for my work/home balance....because it all merged into one. I ended up speaking with my direct managers in early December and explained how it really started to affect my mental & in turn physical health. I was a mess...always felt sick, anxious, not sleeping, working 12+ hours a day and weekends. It was horrible. My boss took my concerns seriously, and after a few meetings we decided this wasn't good for me anymore. I transferred to a new team 2/1 and I'm feeling so much better. I was scared to speak up, but really pleasantly surprised about how it was handled.
Can you talk to your manager or HR or someone at work who can help?

Very sad, I can't tell you the relief though! I was fired because I reported them to DOL and they got in trouble. I don't regret it.

Every person and employer who lied, endangered others, and did what was good for them at the expense of others has shown themselves for what they are. Glad you exposed what was going on.

You do know you are covered under whistleblower.

I have felt that before - it's horrible. I feel for those in a toxic workplace right now during these times where work and home are so closely intertwined as it's harder to separate.

I did when I had an awful boss. It was unbearable b/c it took me over a year to find another job. But now I'm in a better job and I don't feel that b/c my boss is great and I'm able to work from home.

Exactly - you might want to consider contacting an attorney

Re: Work question

I think COVID was the best thing to ever happen in my job. I love what I do. I just hate where I do it and the place is full of toxic personalities.

Being mostly remote, or when I am in the office, with only a few coworkers at a time, makes things so much more bearable.

I don't know how I'll handle it when we go back full time, but as of now, its bearable.

My direct boss is wonderful which is why I stay (in addition to the high salary) ...it's everyone else....

I used to have a job like that. Every day I would have to psych myself up, saying to myself “8 hours, I can do this for 8 hours “. It wasn’t the people I worked with, - I was in a small office of a giant corporation and I worked with a lot of good people. it was the corporate culture that sucked and made everyone miserable

Thanks all. My boss is great but has no actual power. I’m in a weird spot that I have a skill set that no one else who works there really has so I get pulled into a lot of craziness and interface with people higher up than my boss on a regular basis. I told them I couldn’t keep doing this so they eventually hired another person (took almost a year) but she’s pretty much taking over going forward so I’m still left to untangle and follow up on all sorts of crap. It’s a nightmare.
