opinions on Port Washington

House hunting for us has started again. Decided against Great Neck and now thinking about Port Washington.

Any thoughts/opinions/rumors about Port Washington?
Good/Bad - I'll take all.

I do know it is a bit North from northern blvd and the LIE, but its good in terms of the LIRR.

Thank you

One of my good friends just moved there. She mostly likes it. Her kids are little and she had a hard time finding daycare that worked with their hours (both parents work full time). They're nice, normal, down to earth people.

My DH has family who lives there and they aren't really the kind of people I would associate with if I weren't forced to. Very stuck up.

But, alas, that is every "nice" neighborhood, I suppose.

Port is a great, very diversified community. It has a great down town, great schools, great commute to NYC via train. Very pretty waterfront area and good community pool (Manorhaven). All of my friends that live there are very happy. We live very close by so many of my friends are from Port. The only downfall is that some parts are very far north and can take a while to get to the LIE/Northern State. House prices range from moderate to very expensive.

Thanks for the posts.

I did some searches on reddit and found a bunch of posts talking about how Port Washington people dislike (and even hostile) to NYC people who are moving in.

Others said that their child needed services and couldn't get any and parents shunned them once they found out about the child needing services

Silly question - since its a "Port"/waterfront - are you paying "extra" because its water related/nearby?
So if we're not into boats, water stuff - then are we wasting money?
or is 'waterfront' costs not part of the home prices?

Having lived in the area for 15 years I am going to tell you that those two things are completely false. Everyone around here has moved out from the city.

And I know many kids who get services in port, none are shunned for it. Many people move here because the schools are so good and if you need services they are readily available,

I think you will only pay up for the waterfront aspect if you buy a house directly on the water.

Re: opinions on Port Washington

PW has an Arts foundation that sponsors arts & culture programming for district students. Schools are generally very good there. Lots of downtown activity, walkable in some areas. Lots of city transplants.

Houses seem smaller in size including properties. Reminded me of city living. But there are areas that have bigger homes & property sizes out of my price range.

Re: opinions on Port Washington

I worked in PW for 7 years. The office I was in was pretty far north - more like Manorhaven.

It is diverse and has a nice community feel. It's hilly and scenic and a lot of the houses are really charming. The schools are terrific.

The LIRR is great. Bypassing Jamaica to the city makes such a difference. It feels so quick when you're used to one of the other lines.

It's far from the highway but it's not terrible when you learn the back roads. There are a few different ways to get out of there when you have to. It's also better now with some "big box" type stores now like Target so it's not like you're stuck in a tiny town with no amenities.

I haven't worked there in almost 14 years and I still think about the bakery, bagel place, Mediterranean market, and some of the restaurants.

I'd live there in a heartbeat.

i lifeguarded over there- it's a nice area, some not so nice parts. Schools are good overall. There's nothing wrong with PW. It's a great neighborhood.

As a side note: if I had a PW budget, I would personally opt for Manhasset instead. I just like Manhasset way better. Their sports are fantastic there and I like the overall look of it better than PW

Thanks for the information everyone.

I don't know if we have a PW budget, but we feel priced out of Manhasset (in terms of house/property taxes) - we saw some houses there 6 years ago (when we looked previously) and they were all old and tiny. Of course thats due to the budget.

You get more bang for your buck in port wash but taxes in manhasset are a little lower relative to property values.

We have a lot of family there and I'd say they're down to earth and normal. Can't speak for everyone of course and with any pricey area, I'm sure you get your fair share of stuck-up snots. We live in a similar area and just ignore those type of people.

It's a beautiful area, just takes a long time to get there by car.

I have family in the area. It is very nice and has great schools. I love the area down on Shore Rd. on the water, by Louie's. I don't think you can go wrong in Port. If you will be looking for daycare, I can tell you about a TERRIBLE one in Port that you really should stay away from.

My DH works in the PW school district (not a teacher) for the past 20+ years and I would live in PW if we had the budget (when we were house hunting all the homes in our price range were fixer uppers and our house was nicer). The schools are great, DH says the schools bend over backwards for the families to the point where parents run the show and some teachers have quit over the strong parent influence. There are parts of PW that are in flood zones so watch out for that. Also the reason some folks claim Manor Haven section gets a bad reputation is purely demographics (working families from South/Central America and Mexico) but the house stock is quite varied- gorgeous huge homes and smaller homes on smaller lots- you will see great variety which is what appealed to me.

Only downside is that local traffic getting in and out of PW is a pain- only 2 major roads going into the area and 1 has traffic lights every mile so it feels like you are driving down Northern Blvd just to move 1 mile. In the winter, homes that sit on hilly roads usually have more headaches w snow removal. Also the schools use a lot of their snow days, I remember DH would be home so much more due to school closures while our schools were open (Bellmore-Merrick) because the snowfall totals were less. So weather wise it’s the only negative. If I sold my home now, PW would be where I would want to to live (also politically appealing to me as a hard core liberal lol)
