FB Marketplace

Does anyone use this?

Why are people the worst on there?

I’ve been clearing out a lot of stuff and I’ve made a few hundred.

The one problem I have been having is that people won’t accept that I will not give my address right away. It depends on the item, but if I can carry it and it doesn’t need to be checked that it’s working with electricity, I suggest a public place by me. If it is large, then I give them my address and name when they are on the way here to eliminate no-shows.

But recently, I have gotten some people arguing with me about the fact that I won’t give my address. So I’ll get the standard “Is this available” question. I say yes and they say “Give me address”. Yes, like that. I say, no sorry, but I live by this bus stop. We can meet there or at the local supermarket (lots of people around). They usually respond with nothing, no, or “what are you afraid of?”.

There is also those that treat it like a dating app...

What have been your experiences on Marketplace?

I really haven't used FB Marketplace, but I agree with you about not giving out your address. You don't know who these people are and there's no reason why they need to know where you live.

I'm part of a FB group for my town. People will post that they're getting rid of stuff and it's out on the curb. They post their address. I guess they figure it's neighbors, so they're probably safe. But still -- I wouldn't do that! I would ask them to PM me for the address if they're interested. I wouldn't post it for everyone to see.

I use my local fb town selling page. But I only give my address in a private message once they commit to a pickup day/time. Before that I just tell them what town I’m in.

My husband will sell stuff on marketplace every so often. But he will meet the buyer in the McDonalds or 7-11 parking lot and he will always take someone with him. I made it clear to him that I do not want random people knowing where we live but once someone had to come to the house because my husband sold a pac man machine and there was no way that could’ve went down in a public place.

I give them my address the day of. Going to meet somewhere is a hassle and if I have to drive 5-10 minutes and then wait till somebody shows up (usually late) to sell a $20 item it’s not worth the aggravation. I’ve been asked by people to meet somewhere in the middle or near a train station to sell a $20 item. I tell them not worth my time.

Same thing I much prefer to go to somebody’s house to pick something up so at least I know they are there and I am not waiting at some random place wasting my time. That’s probably why you get people saying “what you afraid of”.

I don’t really care if somebody knows where I live. In all seriousness what can come out of that. I’ve been selling stuff on craigslist and FB for over 15 years. Never had an issue.

I see your point. I guess since I almost never sell or purchase things from FB Marketplace or Craigslist, I wasn't considering the hassle factor.

I see your point. But with some encounters I get a gut feeling. Others usually ask about the item and have questions. I always tell them the area. But when I get hit with “Give me address” as the second thing to say to me and then they argue with me, yeah it’s not going to happen. It’s always men, too. And one even went so far as to send kissing emojis. So, yeah, in those cases, no. The one that sent kissing emojis is the one who said “what are you afraid of”.

Re: FB Marketplace

I wonder if it's cultural or something but I've sold things on FB marketplace a few times and no one has ever demanded my address so abruptly.

Like another poster said, I give it and let them come here but after we've made arrangements. I've been doing contact free anyway - just a few weeks ago I sold a bag of toys I was paid for via venmo and then I just put them out for the people who picked up.

I can see being turned off by the way they phrased things.

I usually use no contact selling on FB. They pay me via Paypal and i leave it outside my house for them to pick up once they pay. If they ask address i tell them the town only because some people wont drive far to get something.

I won’t give my address either until they text me one hour prior to schedule pick up time to confirm they are coming. Then and only then will I give my address.

I also have immediately blocked people for asking me if something is still available and then quickly writing “???” if I didn’t answer right away.

Re: FB Marketplace

I just do "porch pick up". I say in my ad that I live next to Johnson Elementary School and once we've made the deal I give them my address and never have contact with them.
