There's a 20 20 rule that can help you let go of things. If you can replace something for under $20 in less than 20 minutes you can let it go.
If I'm not sure about something I throw it in my closet or the attic for a while and see if I miss it. Once something is out of my house I very rarely regret it. Air fryer, crockpot, jewelry, all but three books, my ironing board and so much not are gone with no regrets.

Re: minimalism... has anyone tried?

I don't follow minimalism per se but I lean in that direction because I'm frugal and don't like clutter.

I hate having to dig through a million things to find what I need. I don't have patience for that lol.

I am constantly donating and, less often, selling.

On the flip side, I also feel like sometimes decluttering stresses people unnecessarily. I see it a little in this thread.

As long as you (general you) aren't living like a hoarder or spending a lot of money, and as long as it doesn't bother you or your family, possess all the shit you want lol.

My mother is a minimalist and loves to throw out things even furniture if they serve no purpose or they are outdated. She constantly goes around my house to tell me how much junk i own. She's thrown out perfectly good items just so they are no longer in her house

Re: minimalism... has anyone tried?

I wouldn't call myself a minimalist, but I have followed a few minimalist resources for years, as sort of a counterbalance to all the consumerism influences out there.

I used to be fairly minimalist in my 20s- I was terrible at organizing things, so I'd just get rid of them. ANd I have never been that sentimental. When I moved into my 1st apt, my roommate's sister, looked at my room compared to hers and asked, "where's all my stuff?"
Chat Icon

I acquired so much more when I got married. I am working on it now that I am unemployed. The hardest thing right now is clothing--I haven't worn my work clothes in over a year. I'm not sure if/when I will need them again & if I even still like them. I am also between sizes, so If I need something, I don't think the next size down would fit yet, and I don't want to buy more in the old size.

Anyway, some good resources are
The minimalists ( website, podcast, youtube)
Joshua Becker (youtube)
The Minimalist Mom ( youtube)

this is the balance i want to strike!
i love all things yarn related and will not let them go. they do bring me true love and joy. using them brings me love and joy.
the other stuff, just makes me sad that they aren't being valued. i'm learning to let go of the things that are just taking up space for no reason.

Yarn is cheap and useful. Have at it.

Seriously though - you have worked hard and raised a wonderful son alone. I'm sure you stepped over matchbox cars and legos for years, so now it's your turn. Buy all the yarn you want. Make a fr!ggin yarn pit and jump in it repeatedly. You deserve it.

yes, i've also been giving things away on local free fb like crazy. also donating to thrift shops.

i agree, there's still way too much stuff. i feel like i'm pushing that boulder up the hill and it rolls back down.

i've pretty much stopped buying anything retail. we don't really need anything anyway. now it's just getting rid of what we have and don't want or use.

dh has no less than 52 t shirts. i counted them when i did a closet reorganization.

Fifty. two.

lol. And women get a bad rep for shopping too much. . . .Chat Icon

Controlling what comes in is just as important as getting rid of things. It's not just shopping, but accepting gifts, promotional freebies (I have so many from my old job), paperwork, hand-me-downs, etc.

I wouldn't say I am a pure minimalist but I certainly am not a collector of things either. I am really more in the middle coupled with being a super organizer of everything. lol I like everything to have a place and a purpose in my home. I'm really into creating "zones" wherever I can. For example, the food in my pantry is divided up into zones (like items together) so I can find things easier, my kitchen cabinets are divided into zones so that all of my baking things are in one spot, cooking things in another. I live by my labeler and The Container Store is my heaven. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I feel like it's okay to have things, even a lot of things, so long as you are organized. When your things become overwhelming chaos and stress you out, then you know it's time to declutter. My personality is such that I really cannot function in messy clutter, it stresses me out so much. If my house is in chaos I feel like everything else is in chaos so for me organization of my things is really key. It allows my day to day to function more smoothly and more importantly, I feel like I actually get to enjoy the things that I own because they all have a home and I can find them easily. Chat Icon

ETA - Your yarn stash is my kitchen tools and ingredients. PURE joy!!! Chat Icon

Yup! I agree! Before Covid, my daughter had Career Day at school. Everyone gave out stuff. I was so annoyed with what she brought home!

I tend to agree with this. Life is short- if you want to have stuff, have it.
If you are the type that hates clutter and it bothers you and steals your peace, don't' have it.
I feel like a lot of times people try hard to be someone they are not... a neat freak, a morning person, a gym rat... and to me, that's not being true to yourself. That's doing something because you feel it's better to be that way than the way you are... and fighting against certain aspects of who you are usually leads to unhappiness in the long run.

Why the need to be nasty, once again? A nice thread with no drama, yet you feel the need to just throw a low blow out there. Apparently you’re momma never taught you, if you don’t have anything nice to say, zip it.

For me, it is not just the mess. Just knowing that we have a tent we haven't used since 2007 hidden away in a closet drives me bonkers, but my husband is more out of sight, out of mind. I like the stuff to be gone, but I don't like to deal with it ( esp if it is shred) or figure out where it should go. Currently trying to figure out what to do with about 100 cds from the 90s. . .

I also don't like to stock up on things, but I had to make an exception for Covid, and I am still working through the handsoap I bought. ( I could only find a 6 pack of large refills online.)

For stuff like that, if you post on Craigslist somebody will come by and take it in a heartbeat!
Just give your street name and say that it’s at the curb for trash collection. Whatever nonsense I have is always gone within two hours.
