Re: How often do you eat dinner as a family.

If a couple really works opposite schedules they may not ever be able to eat dinner together unless it’s a day off or vacation or whatever. None of us can clone ourselves.

You carve out time together in other ways – maybe breakfast, or even just a cup of coffee if the eating schedules don’t line up.

Or you can play a game together, sit down and talk, watch a show, etc. There are a million choices.

I like to eat together a few times a week at least but life gets in the way sometimes. And some times of the year are different than others.

It’s not that serious.

There is nothing to explain. When something is a priority, dinner or otherwise, you figure out how to make it work. I'm not sure what's so hard to understand. Stop making assumptions about me or anyone else as you literally have NO idea what you're talking about nor do you know anything about my life. Just accept the fact that different families have different priorities and different ways of doing things. Why do you always need everyone to explain everything to you? My comment was pretty self explanatory.

I think that Windy is just trying to point out that, in order to put that food on the dinner table, some times one spouse or the other needs to be at work while the rest of the family is eating dinner. Surely feeding your family is more important than all of you eating that food together. I think we can all agree that would be the priority when you can't just get another job or change careers.

Thank you. It’s not always easy to plan dinners around schedules and honestly while it is nice to eat together, it is not the end all be all with most families.
When you are used to working a “normal” time job, you don’t really understand how different life is and many just can’t make eating together a priority.
Sounds like many live in a bubble and the ones they do know who have come across this just move elsewhere and others just have their priorities messed up.

NOBODY said dinner is the "end all and be all". NOBODY said that some people don't have crazy schedules. NOBODY said they are better than anyone else for making dinner a priority. NOBODY said there is one way to do things. NOBODY said you HAVE to have dinner together EVERY night. NOBODY is telling anyone to move or get another job just so they can eat together.

Your comments about "people living in a bubble and people having their priorities out of whack" simply because they value a family dinner is literally one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

How about just accepting the fact that every family does things differently. MANY on here have replied that they still do a family dinner, WHY do you and a few others feel the need to keep trying to point out how that is not possible, not feasible, not something anyone does in the 21st century and not important when people are LITERALLY telling you the EXACT opposite.

Only on LIF could a simple thread about who eats dinner as a family get people twisted up in a knot. Chat Icon

“It depends on what you value”

“There is nothing to explain. When something is a priority, dinner or otherwise, you figure out how to make it work.”

Once again you make others try to feel like if they don’t have dinner together they don’t value it or make it a priority because you can figure it out better then they can.

Don’t you see how you come across here?

That’s precisely how it came off and she doesn’t see it.

I’m embarrassed for myself that I even added fuel to the fire on an internet message board tiff. But there is this constant air of superiority and lack of self awareness that I just don’t understand.

But whatever. White flag. If someone wants to feel superior to me, go right ahead. The fact that my family eats dinner together isn’t on my list of accomplishments. Chat Icon

THANK.YOU.
I was too busy today celebrating my child’s graduation to go back and forth about dinner. It is obvious that she feels if you don’t spend all your free time with your family, you don’t value them and you are not as good as she is.
We had dinner together, with my sibling who supposedly hates me as per this board and we had a fabulous time. We will have dinner tomorrow too.
Some people are needier than others it seems.

Wow, even how often you eat dinner with your children can turn a thread into drama these days.

The reasons things like this turn into drama is because people say things in such condescending tones and it annoys the shit out of people.

Exactly and you call them out and they try and turn it around like it is your fault.

Some don’t understand that as they have never worked opposite shifts and live black and white.

Nothing surprises me anymore especially when there are a few who love to take things out of context just to cause unnecessary drama. I don't understand getting your nose twisted because people do things differently or because they have different priorities.

Some people think dinner as a family is important. Some don't. There is no right or wrong. Do what works for YOUR family. What goes on in someone else's house should not remotely matter to you.

You don’t know what it is like to have opposite schedules and a full time job with a family but you keep saying people can figure it out.
Maybe dinner is important to many but while mom works 8-5 and dad works 4-12, then picking up at daycare and school, running to activities, homework, baths, squeezing in eating alone is difficult to do.
You’ve lived a privileged spoiled life with people who didn’t work and worked 9-5 jobs. You really can’t see outside of your bubble for most things and it is pretty apparent.

I have to agree with this because you (Hofstra) actually suggested that having dinner together would be so important to you that you would find a way to make it work, even if that included uprooting your family and moving to another state! In one breathe you say different strokes for different folks but in the next when someone says it’s physically impossible for their family you snap back with if it’s a priority you make it work. You don’t acknowledge that there is the possibility that it might be important to someone but due to financial reasons they can’t make it work. It’s insensitive and out of touch.

Listen, for me personally, it’s not a priority. Like I said this country’a obsession with food is bizarre to me. I’d rather go out and do activities with my family than worry about dinner.

If it's not important to you to have dinner together, then it's not important to you. Nobody said it had to be. For some it is, for others it isnt. Do you.

I also did NOT I say to move to have dinner together, that's ridiculous. What I said was I had a friend who was tired of the NY rat race so she moved to make more time for her family which is not an uncommon thing to do.

There really is no argument here, do whatever you want to do and what works for your family.

Listen June Cleaver, there is no reason to call her comments "painfully stupid and ignorant." None what-so-ever. And without these pages and pages of nonsense this board would be completely dead, so at least acknowledge the life that WW brings to these boards. Without her, I'm pretty sure that LIF would have shut down a long time ago and then what would you do with all that free time? You might have to consider getting an actual job!

Thank you so much. Took a needed break for lunch. Kids out of house and just me and hubby and I am at table and he is in living room right next to me so I guess you can say we are eating together lololol.
Funny how in one breathe she will say to each their own and let people do what they want but then call me names. Bipolar much? Lololol

360 days a year. I go on two retreats a year, so 4 nights a year I'm not home for dinner. There is probably one other random day someone DH isn't home for dinner - but that's it.

Funny how no one is speaking of breakfast or lunch together. I wonder if people find that as important.

During undergrad we actually looked at research studies about this issue - eating dinner as a family. At the time (20+ years ago) the research was very clear about the positive effects of family dinner together. The incidence of divorce was lower. Kids had higher grades and a higher self esteem. It was fascinating.

At the time nobody had studied breakfast or lunch in this context, and I don't know if the research has continued.

Meatballs were a hit and we all had dinner together. Older kid was going out and getting ready so didn’t eat with us but I pick my battles as many will need to learn as their kids get older.

I grew up NOT eating dinner together. The table has stuff on it and it just wasn’t important. I didn’t want that. So yes e we do. Certainly not every night but most. Lunch and breakfast too during weekends and vacations. But kids are still young. Dh and I are home earlier than most. I think it’s important but I know time will be harder as kids get older

I have heard similar things and I am sure that things like having dinner as a family can be an indicator of many other variables in the family. I think that if a family regularly sits down for meals together it shows that there is a somewhat stable home environment and that will create an atmosphere where relationships and children can thrive. However, as with anything, there will be plenty of dysfunctional families that somehow manage to eat meals together and plenty of functional families for which sitting down to dinner every night is not important.

What's interesting to me is that where I live I know very few families that are able to sit down to dinner every night and I can say the divorce rate here is very low, most of the kids have more confidence than they actually should and in general it is a town of over achievers, none of whom would measure success by the amount of times per week that they were able to have dinner as a family. Especially if that dinner interfered in any way with lacrosse practice.

Re: How often do you eat dinner as a family.

Before covid it was 4/5 times a week. Since the dining table became DH's office (we live in the city, so we don't have too much space at all) we don't have dinner as a family at home anymore. We eat together when I push to have brunch or early dinner outside. With sports it is more difficult. I try to take walks with my DS and run errands, and they have become a great way to chat. Yes, I miss dinners as family, but I feel I have to adapt with what we are going through.

Re: How often do you eat dinner as a family.

We tend to eat together, which is usually pretty late, more often than not, but it really depends on the kids’ sports schedules. We typically go in different directions each night with 2 of our kids playing multiple sports. At least some of us will eat at the same time and if we can make it work, we’ll all eat together.
