Vacation ideas for 9 year old
I am thinking about going to Southern California this summer, but I would also like to check out other places.
My sister goes to a lot of resort like places - Beaches, Woodloch, etc and those seem nice because all the activities are just there for you. While Turks and Caicos looks great, it is not in my budget.
Does anyone have any other budget friendly resorts? We’re not huge drinkers so it doesn’t necessarily need to be all inclusive. My friend suggested the Nickelodeon resorts but then my sister is telling me DR and Mexico are unsafe and I’m crazy to think about going to either of those.

Atlantis is fun. You can stay at the Comfort Suites for a fraction of the price and utilize all the amenities at Atlantis free. It's next door. We have not stayed there since we have Marriott points and have always stayed at Atlantis with those. Travel has become very pricey, places that used to be budget friendly just aren't anymore I'm finding. Sign up for the Travelzoo Top 20 deals. They always have great deals on there. They release on Wednesdays.

We go to Mexico every year and it is SAFE, and so is DR. You just have to be careful when leaving the resorts, and if you do, make sure you use a reputable company. We stay at the Grand Moon Palace which is all inclusive, and has a great water park for the kids, especially for your child's age. I do agree with the above poster, travel prices have gone up, especially airfare. When do you plan on going? Try going on off-peak weeks to save on money.

Vacation ideas for 9 year old
I wouldn't go to Mexico right now bc they just arrested El Chapo's son and the cartel is likely to retaliate. Nick resort in DR isn't worth the money right now (food is terrible) and it isn't on Bavaro beach so the water is much rougher. With a 9 yr old I would personally go someplace like Costa Rica or Belize. Rent a car and you could do beaches, zip lining, hiking, see lots of animals etc. It's pretty easy to do on your own and while everything is more expensive than before covid it can be done on a variety of budgets. If you do California, you could do a one way trip (or loop if car is too pricey) and go from San Fran to San Diego. There is so much to see and do like the Monterey Aquarium, whale watching and the Pacific coast hwy, Yosemite, Disneyland, La Jolla Cove, Joshua Tree, Sequoia etc. You know your family best but at your sons age you could skip the all inclusive and really do some incredible trips! Good luck!

He was arrested in Mexico City, nowhere near tourist areas. I was referring to Cancun, which is safe.

I think we’re going to do Southern CA. There is just so much to do and I think we’ll all have a good time. My DH and I have been to the San Fran area a lot and to San Diego only once - that’s why we’re leaning to just doing that.
Next year, we’re going to do a national park. Year after, I’d like to go to Europe.

We went to San Francisco then did a 2 night stay in the Big Sur area. It was AMAZING. The coast of Big Sur is just so beautiful beyond words. I absolutely loved it. We stayed in Carmel at the Carmel Mission Inn. I went with my SO, but I definitely want to go back with my kids and drive more of the highway (we went to McWay Falls and back). Yellowstone is also amazing for those ages and my hands down most beautiful place I've ever visited is Banff. Moraine Lake is so beautiful. So many awesome places to visit on this continent!
